It's better than "I done that". ;-)

The way you present it, it does look awful, but I'm not sure that I have a problem with that when used for emphasis in informal speech. "You said you wouldn't go there, but you DID go!" "Little Billy said he wouldn't eat his peas, but he DID eat them when I told him he wouldn't grow big and strong if he didn't." "He denied that he had done it, but I knew that he DID do it." Sometimes "but he did it" might be enough, sometimes not. Such usages are not suitable for the written word, except in dialogue. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

Emphasis in informal speech is questionable as correct, since "informal speech" is hardly a correct reference. > "You said you wouldn't go there, but you DID go!" In that example there was a fair attempt at emphatic indignation, which falls flat due to the poor grammar. Repeating "go" is where it fails. There are two variations of your sentence which will work: ""You said you wouldn't go there, but you DID!" or using the correct past tense, "You said you wouldn't go there, but you went!" > "Little Billy said he wouldn't eat his peas, but he DID eat them when I > told him he wouldn't > grow big and strong if he didn't." However, dialogue is not immune from the rules of grammar and correct usage in context just because it is spoken and might be colloquial. In the case of your "Little Billy" example you have used "DID" in an attempt at emphasis, and failed to use a correct past tense in the attempt. It would both read and sound better if written & spoken correctly: "Little Billy said he wouldn't eat his peas, but he ate them when I told him he wouldn't grow big and strong if he didn't." > "He denied that he had done it, but I knew that he DID do it." > Sometimes "but he did it" might be enough, > sometimes not. Such usages are not suitable for the written word, > except in dialogue. ...and for the denial example: "He denied that he had done it, but I knew that he had." The use of "DID" can be, and has been superfluous and clumsy. Just because something is used in speech, does not make it correct, even if that incorrect usage have become common. One such demonstration of word creation is the former non-word, now in common usage, "normalcy" when the perfectly good "normality" has always been there. Now that I have said all that, Usenet groups are the wild west when it comes to the written word and grammar, proper usage, and spelling(mainly due to typos) are usually ignored. We just have to tolerate that, regardless of our pet peeves, and how much bad grammar and usage makes us squirm. -- Regards, Savageduck

Is that formal? I believe I've seen "did" used as an auxiliary verb in movies about formal old court sessions, to emphasize what action was being charged.

Do you mean using the auxiliary verb "do" for emphasis is archaic? I take it you do mean that. According to my Mac dictionary, an archaic word is one that is no longer in everyday use. You do say the auxiliary verb "do" is in everyday use, don't you? It's well understood by English speakers, and it has an excellent grammatical pedigree. I see nothing wrong with it.

You misunderstood me because you didn't see an earlier post that I made. To me, this indicates a context where there was uncertainty on whether or not she would eat the Apple (hey, back on topic :-), so the wording "and did eat it" provides a confrmation/response to the question "did she or didn't she eat the Apple". And consider what would have happened if she ate the Apple, but Adam didn't. Adam would have stayed in paradise, while Eve would have been thrown out. Without contact, it would have been pretty hard for them to pro-create, and god would have had to use his immaculate conception skills all the time to make sure humankind stayed alive. However, with men unable to see naked women, Playboy sales would have skyrocketed in paradise, and there surely would have been some tunnels where men could bring in women into paradise for sex. (aka: prostitution :-) All these problems were caused by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who create that Apple which caused so many problems to Adam and Eve back then.

Are you sure you're a native speaker? There is nothing at all wrong with
"I did do that."
"You need to turn off the router and restart it."
"I did do that, it didn't help."

The "do" is superfluous.

I wonder about little bits like the above. There must be a style-guide
somewhere that gives the subtleties of such things.
If it's fiction, then I suppose you could argue that "this is how the
character speaks". But in the standard "this is how you write proper
English", they both are correct. But one is considered "better writing"
for reason of style.
I don't pretend to know more than the basics of grammar and writing
years ago. But I imagine William Gibson or some other author who's
concise, spare prose manage to tell a story in what seems like the
fewest of words. And I take out what doesn't serve the story I'm trying
to tell.
Not the same thing when you're writing for a TPL report.

One of the worst parts of serving aboard a ship was announcements piped
over the PA. The announcements interrupted busy crewmen. There was
likely to be background noise. Fidelity was "mechanical." Worse yet,
quartermasters liked to speak in monotones with minimal words, like
printed text.
These announcements were distracting, and perhaps half the crew wouldn't
even notice a given announcement. I tried to follow the example of AM
and FM radio announcers before the age when shouting and repetition were
the soul of wit. The ones who announced for farmers doing chores before
dawn may have been the best. They used tempo, rhythm, tone, inflection,
and wording to produce sentences that would flow into the listener's
ears without his effort.
I was proud that everybody seemed to catch my announcements. Shipboard
announcements started with "now," the alert. I used inflection and took
the time to let the diphthong flow. Inflection and rhythm could make
standard wording more natural for the ear to comprehend. For an original
announcement, I might use wordier phrasing than in a written message
because terser phrasing can be harder for the ear to comprehend.
The use of "do" to start a question is an example. To save time and
paper, an ancient monk might have written, "Love ye grapes?" In speech,
"Do ye love grapes?" could be easier to comprehend; "do" serves as an
alert, and, to the ear, the normal word order remains.

Yes, it is, but is emphatic. Almost always correct in speech, less so in written form. And there should be a semi-colon in place of the comma in the simple and facile example. (!)

It is a matter of emphasis.

I agree that the use of "do" as an auxiliary, for emphasis, is
positively acceptable in speech, even serving a significant and
distinct purpose.
However, when someone uses it with the verb "to do" in the present
(e.g., "No, but what I do do is..."), the six-year-old in me cannot
resist bellowing, "You said 'do-do'!!"

Yeah, I did perform the reboot as you suggested. Yeah, I did do the reboot as you suggested. > However, when someone uses it with the verb "to do" in the present > (e.g., "No, but what I do do is..."), the six-year-old in me cannot > resist bellowing, "You said 'do-do'!!" This probably has roots that are quite distinct. Please do perform the reboot as I suggested. Something you might expect a British person to say for instance. Not sure what grammar/rules support this. But it is often used.
