Meanwhile, my SSD is four years old, has been completely filled to
within 100 MB twice, hasn't *ever* had TRIM enabled, and is performing
just fine. : ) You may think you know better than everyone else, but
you're just plain wrong.

No no, you're looking at this all wrong, this is prime signature file
fodder.

The reason that we don't have "bear-proof" garbage cans in the park is that
there is a significant overlap in intelligence between the smartest bears and
the dumbest humans.

Oh, just noticed. This is a 2010 article which states Apple doesn't have
TRIM support.

Got news for ya ! Apple now has TRIM support and makes use of it for its
own drives.

So, if TRIM wasn't needed, why did Apple add it to OS-X ?

garbage collection; so it is even more relevant today.

They are saying that Mac OS X doesn't support TRIM for third-party SSDs,
which is true.

Not for third-party SSDs.

Apple's potential reasoning for supporting TRIM only on certain SSDs has
already been discussed here plenty. I'm not interested in repeating what
has already been said in that regard. Read and learn.

TRIM is actually a very BAD idea on MOST SSDs, so it is best to disable
it than not.

mountain lion, which is what he's asking about, is still available for
purchase.

mavericks is only available if it has been downloaded before and it
will show up in the 'purchased' section in the app store (even though
it's free). if it wasn't downloaded when it was available, there is no
way to get it (legally anyway).

One of the lucky millions. Web usage figures put Yosemite at more than a
third of the installed base of Macs last month, and it will almost
certainly become the most commonly used version this month (though it
isn't likely to be the majority for a few more months). Adoption of
Yosemite has been faster than Mavericks.

If there were widespread problems I think there would be a lot more
wailing and gnashing of teeth. The poor ratings and complaints in
discussion threads suggest that _some_ people are experiencing problems
of some kind, but it may be a relatively small proportion of the total.
As usual, those experiencing problems are more likely to mention it.

I was running Yosemite on an experimental basis during the beta period,
and upgraded my main system to Yosemite shortly after 10.10 was
released.

I had a few minor stability issues with 10.10 (occasional crashes from
standard applications like Mail and Safari), but they appear to have
been fixed in 10.10.1.

I have not experienced any significant issues with 10.10.1, nor have any
of several people I know locally who are running Yosemite.

I do have a few remaining minor issues.

e.g. I have a Transcend JetDrive which normally lives in my SD card
reader slot (it sits almost flush with the side of my MacBook Pro).
After waking from sleep, my system sometimes complains that I didn't
eject it properly, even though I didn't remove it. I'm sure I didn't
bump it, so this feels more like a spurious USB 3.0 drive ejection
problem that I've seen others complaining about. So far it hasn't
suffered any corruption, as the drive had been idle for a long time
before the system went to sleep.

I haven't seen the Wi-Fi issue which some people seem to be reporting.
The upcoming 10.10.2 issue is supposed to have Wi-Fi as one of its focus
areas, so perhaps that problem will be fixed if you wait for 10.10.2
before upgrading to Yosemite. I expect 10.10.2 will be released before
the end of January.

I'm running 10.10.1 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro and a mid-2010 iMac,
and have experienced no major problems, though Mail and Safari do
sometimes crash, even in 10.10.1.

I have had a similar problem with my backup hard drive on my MacBook
Pro, connected through Firewire 800. Quite often, when I open the lid,
I will get a message saying that my backup drive was not ejected
properly, even though it stays connected to the MBP whenever it is on
my desk. Again, no corruption noted, and the drive connects a few
minutes after I open the lid, and backs up the internal HD normally.

Only WiFi issue I've seen is that the MBP may take 30 seconds or more
to find and connect to my wifi network. It always connects thougn, and
I have seen the same behavior in Mavericks. In Mavericks, it might have
been worse, as i sometimes had to manually connect to my network.

I've been having the same problem in Mavericks and now in Yosemite.

Crashes in 10.10.0, maybe, but one thing that appears to have been
solved with Mail.app in 10.10 is its occasional refusal to quit. That
is, the app is not crashed, but the quit menu item was disabled and you
could not quit the app (nor could you force quit it from the GUI). The
only solution was kill it from the command line, which might work or
might lead to an unstable Finder, or reboot.

It didn't happen often, but it happened in 10.5-10.9. I don't think I've
seen it a single time since 10.10 was released.

Nope, it's rock solid.

I no longer have any USB 3.0 drives directly connected to my computer,
which took care of all those sorts of issues. However, to be fair, I see
the same sorts of issues with USB 3.0 enclosures in Windows 7 and 10
(the same enclosure that tend to 'eject' on the Mac.

I did see this when I first hooked up my Drobo 5D, but it turned out I
forgot when you re-install OS X to a new drive, it always turns on
sleep. I always forget this. When the computer slept, the Drobo would
eject and then not reconnect when I came back to the computer. Since
wake-from-sleep is nearly instantaneous, I didn't realize for a day or
two the computer was sleeping.

I was surprised it wasn't released before Christmas, honestly. Very
surprised there was another seed instead.

I'm nore sure, but you ARE special, Jolly. (Maybe that's why your name
is Jolly : D.)

You're a Mac guru, so you're able to solve problems with ease that the
average user (like me) stuggles with and you tackle some Mac problems I
wouldn't even attempt (such as Terminal or changing a hard drive).

Also, the average user only has one Mac to upgrade -- not dozens.
That, too, exemplifies your expertise.

Similarly, I expect that when I go into an Apple reseller store, it
will have Yosemite working perfectly on every Mac displayed. The Apple
store men are the experts, so of course they can do well what others
struggle with.

Yes, but my mom, grandfather, and other friends and family who are
definitely not very technically savvy are using Yosemite without any
major issues. Millions of people are using Yosemite without issue. It
ain't just people who are technically savvy.

Add my 91 year old father to that list. He managed the SL to Mavericks,
to Yosemite upgrades on a 2012 Mac with no issues.

Yes, but those folks have very handy and competent "IT departments" as
close as the phone- family members who are tech savvy.

Tom, I can understand- but I've been updating and upgrading my Macs for
over 25 years. I have three computers here on Mavericks, no problem
worth mentioning.

Old timers may recall always installing the new OS on a separate
partition and running it for months before giving it the go ahead. And
taking old floppies and then the newer floppies (with hard plastic
sides) into a place to swap them for disks that had the new OS on them.....

Hardly. I know quite a few people who are definitely *not* tech-savvy
