I still have a copy of that software that I used under OS/2! Anyone else ever use that?

I still have the diskette for PageMaker 1.2 (I think) that I had for my MacPlus. Aldus used the registration number from your first purchase so you had to keep that diskette and registration number to get upgrades later on. This was such an old version that when I did my first Adobe upgrade, I had to be shunted from person to person because their software didn't recognize this and was eventually told to do special trick with an confirmation code generated by them to force-accept the registration. So I had 1 diskette for the MacOS, 1 diskette for Page Maker, and 1 diskette for documents. I still have Page Maker available on MacOS 8,6 running in SheepShaver. Forget the version though.

I used PageMaker for years, both Aldus and Adobe versions, on various Macs from the 9" monochrome Mac Plus onwards. I still have Adobe PageMaker 7 installed on my current computer's bootable Mac OS 9 / Classic drive, although I haven't used it in a long time. Now I use Adobe InDesign mostly because the old version 2 I have runs under both OS 9 and OS X, but in some ways it's inferior to PageMaker.

In 1986 I did some "desktop publishing" with Pagemaker 1.1 (on a "fat Mac"). We put out a small magazine for a sports psychologist. You could call Aldus (long-distance to Oregon) and ask questions and make suggestions, and they were very helpful and seemed to take your suggestions seriously). Aldus sent us "Pagemaker" t-shirts. Mine has shrunk. Many years later, the oul' Woman was using Pagemaker professionally; she's since moved to InDesign. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Is there a way to automatically insert an link the text frame when one adds a page to a document ? (PM did that).

Or must it be emabled for each image object after it has been created ? Just curious on why this wasn't the default as it is for just about every other application out there.

Include Shift to keep the image to it's correct ratio.

See, that is the problem. With InDesign, yu need to find hidden tricks that used to be done naturally in PageMaker. The problem with lack of books is that it is hard to know about features that are hidden unless you specifically search for them With a printed book, you can peruse and find features you didn't know existed. So when you need them, you know they exist.

So when you need them, you know they exist. I can't remember how I found that out ... might have been just via experimenting, InDesign's Help, somewhere online ... or it may have been from the actual printed manual (almost 500 pages) that came in the box. Unfortunately they no longer do manuals with software, they expect you to download and waste your own ink to print the manual, or buy something like the "InDesign for Dummies" book ... meanwhile they are, as usual, charging you the same price for getting less. :-(

I don't know about the newer versions of InDesign, but at least in InDesign 2 there's no Build Booklet feature - that was a great time saver in PageMaker, which in InDesign 2 has to be done by manually shuffling pages around.
