There is legitimate modern word usage. For example, you are not going 
to find too many horse draw cabriolets these days, but the word still 
describes the basic characterizing feature of the vehicle.
I am just surprised that "petard" has yet to find a modern usage.

This is an area where political correctness comes into play, where a 
previously discriminated against, and exploited population are 
struggling to identify themselves and avoid t6he use of the

The Maori word for white people is "pakeha" (pa-key-ha) dating from
when white people were first seen in New Zealand, but still widely used
today. Apparently the original literal translation is "white pig",
"white maggot", or "white ghost".

There was even a "darkly humourous" song recorded quite a few years ago
called "Puha and Pakeha" (poo-ha and pa-key-ha), which is basically
about Maori cooking and eating white people - although I don't think
historically they ever did. There's at least a couple of versions on

There is a news site OneNewsNow.com that is associated with the
American Family Association Christian outfit that had a policy of
replacing every occurrence of the word "gay" with "homosexual,"
regardless of context. In 2008 there was a sports story about sprinter
Tyson Gay and the story ended up with references like

"Tyson Homosexual was a blur in blue..."

and

"'It means a lot to me,' the 25-year-old Homosexual said."
