You are a 'droid. I'm not the only one who thinks iTunes needs a major
overhaul and that has been stated by others in this NG in the past.
The fact is that iTunes has evolved over time collecting features and
add ons and accomodations as a ship collects barnacles plying the trade
routes.
It does work as a music player and I enjoy it for that (esp. sharing to
a laptop hooked into whatever sound system), but using it for apps
downloading and perusing the Apple store is so badly laid out as to be
embarrassing to the profession of software design.
Frankly iTunes as a music, even video launcher, is one thing, but mixing
apps management into it is plain stupid - or at least poorly done. (I'm
just thankful that Mac apps are not wrapped into it as well, but that's
also a hint about how Apps for the iDevices should be managed).
Where both you and Bill have been using it so long and not perhaps
noticing the incongruity of its design, a relative newcomer like myself
sees it for the blivet it is. (I started using iTunes on a PC in about
2006 or so).
It is time for Apple to do a clean sheet where iTunes is concerned.

Apps for iDevices (iOS) are via iTunes.
Apps for Mac (OS X) are via App Store (a function that is irksome in
that they've removed the "download size" for updates. Though they show
it for Mountain Lion).
Also irksome is that I can't run XCode because there is an update to it
related to iDevice apps. But I don't code for iDevices, I code good old
Pascal and a bit of C for stuff that will never go on an iDevice.
So I have to update XCode (though there is no need to for my purposes)
and they don't say how big the DL will be. For those of us on capped
ISP's that's a PITA.

Apple does great work overall and I wouldn't consider Windblows. That
doesn't mean their errors should be glossed over.

Learn to read. I didn't say it didn't work well. I said it is poorly
designed for the user - it has evolved into a blivet. It evolved into a
blivet because Apple just kept adding stuff to it beyond what a basic
music player should do. Download tunes? Okay. Download video. er,
sure. Download apps? uh, really? It's just gotten out of hand.
That's not an absolute. It is difficult for anyone to declare when
something is crossing the threshold from okay to blivet. But once it is
an unmistakable blivet it can be called little else.

Got it in one, didn't I? it's not that it's complex, it's that it's buggy and does *far* too many things. it began life as just an mp3 player, thus the name itunes. now it manages music, videos, tv shows, streaming audio, genius, ping (even though nobody uses it), ios apps, photos, e-books, ringtones, podcasts, bookmarks, notes, calendar items, contacts, ios device activation, ios firmware updates, ios backups and i probably forgot some stuff.

I have to wonder if this has to do with the fact that they have a windows version and want to have a common code base and simplify how much they have on Windows. If they split iTunes into multiple components, it would become more complex to the user and would requie multiple separate programmes on windows.

Correctly designed, those parts common with the Windows version would
not be lost or compromised. When the "windows" switch is used at
compile time, those functions unique to OS X are simply not compiled
into it.

It's not so much the breadth of what it does as how it is organized,
operates and is presented to the user.
iTunes needs to be re-analyzed, top down, by function, by media, by user
interface and so on and then re-written accordingly. Likely 80% of the
software is re-usable as is - after proper re-design of the structure of
the thing.
As to "multiple separate programs" iTunes is mostly already that, just
integrated and compiled into one UI - badly.

Even if forgetting some stuff that is a good illustration of "the

Of course I use most of those features and can even lecture on the fine
points of some of them.
Of course all of them are related to a single thing: photo editing.
Unlike iTunes which is related to more things that have nothing to do
with "tunes" or music than things that have to do with music.
Next time you try to draw a parallel, use a ruler.

No, you were trying to cite an extreme example of software that does a
lot as it has evolved in a structured _photo-centric_ manner over the
past near 25 years. And then you introduce a deflection to gloss over
your clumsiness.
And that s/w package (CS5) sells for over $500 for good reason as it is
the standard tool of most photo editing pros and amateur photographers.
If it were a blivet (like iTunes) it would not sell for anywhere near
that price.
But, take good cheer, there is a reduced functionality version
(Elements) for about $100 that will still give you much more than most
photographers need and is still far superior to the iTunes blivet in all
respects.
