Of course not. You're just throwing stones with no accuracy and lesser
effect.
iTunes is usable as well as needlessly complex, functionally
inconsistent and user-interface disorganized.

No functions to learn. Just a 3rd party patch/workaround to repair the
damage done by the iCould sync bug on the Mac.

The nature of this bug is that it affects some computers, not all, and
from what I read to varying degrees. So you happen to have a computer
on which it has not had an effect or minimally so.
As I said before, when a key product from Apple (their huge splash over
iCloud) comes out of the paddock buggy I don't walk from it, I run.
I won't use workarounds to fix it.
I won't manually fix many entries in my calendar.
Instead I'll use iTunes/iPhone sync (which works) to sync those
calendars. I don't need iCloud for that - esp. when it the sync
function has known bugs.
The whole purpose of the iCloud is to reduce effort and improve ones lot
by reducing work. It has failed in my case and that of the people in
the linked forum above - which is not a unique list. They, like you,
are not "nobodies".

You're wrong. Browne may or may not know how to handle calendars, but that doesn't change the fact that there was a *bug* in some early iCloud migrations which did cause duplicates. Moreover, Apple has a history of bugs and burps in sync services. It hosed my Address Book at least twice (though, in fairness, that was several generations back with iSync.) Nevertheless, you cannot conclude that the user doesn't know what he's doing when sync services or migrations duplicate data.

Export photos from iPhoto to a folder on the computer Um, no. That may be the way *you* are doing it, but it's not the only way Apple provides. (a) you can have any of several apps automatically start up when you plug in the camera. iphoto is the likely default, but you could also have it be Image Capture. So step (2) is unnecessary (b) if you don't want to use iPhoto, don't. ImageCapture will download to any folder you like. Or send them to some app you like. So there's no need for separate steps (3) or (4). It's the same two steps, but with a nicer interface than dragging and dropping files. And it's already on your computer. > > That is something Apple could make a lot simpler - and w/o the stinkin' iCould. They have. It's been around for a long time. You already have it. Image Capture has been around since at least 10.4 (probably longer, but I don't remember off the top of my head), was totally updated in 10.6, and not only speaks to your camera, but also to your scanner and lots of other devices. It's what I use with my AIO networked print/scan/fax. (The current version with ML is 6.2 (451), and the copyright says 2000-2012, so maybe it was around with the very first OSX - predating even iPhoto by a couple of years)

You can set Preview to open when it detects a new card being attached to the computer. Most cameras can be set to look like a card. So, hit button to Import. Select directory if you want it to be different than what's presented.

I use Canon's own software for my camera, but have found Preview very helpful for downloading photos from my iPhone. Unlike iPhoto, it lets me save and organize the photos just how I want--such as in directories of my choice, as John noted. Patty

Although the poll is indeed about a DSLR (which is a dumb idea for Apple), the article is about a point-and-shoot. I think a good, reasonably priced point-and-shoot that would geotag pictures and directly load them to Photostream or some social networking sites might be a winning product idea, though it is hard to imagine it capturing the market share Apple is used to.

That's what it will be if it is to be.

I think it could catch on like wild fire.
One of the problems right now is the massive choice in P&S cameras. Go
to dpreview.com to get a feel for it.
What Apple can bring to that is a single offering at a time (in 2 or 3
under the skin variations) and simplify the whole thing. Add
WiFi/Bluetooth and the Apple USB connector, no removable memory card (it
would have 8 or 16 GB of photo/video memory).
Throw in a decent optic, about 16 - 200mm (in 35mm terms), (designed by
Zeiss and made by a good glass fab) with a decent sized sensor (at least
8x6 mm, larger if possible) and it could be quite a winner. And please
a real flash.
It will be sleek and slim (other than the lens) and probably sell by the
gazillions while gutting the other's sales.

Well, I would think seriously about it. But I have trouble imagining it reaching iPhone levels of dominance. The market size and the replacement time for digitial cameras is (I think) smaller and longer (respectively) than that for phones. Also, there are a lot of cheap cameras on the market (many of them are not very good). Apple, if true to form, would make a high quality product at a competitive price for that quality level. But I'm not sure how many discriminating consumers there are in the point-and-shoot market (certainly there are some, but judging from the success of cheap mediocre camers, there aren't that many). > One of the problems right now is the massive choice in P&S cameras. > Go to dpreview.com to get a feel for it. Yeah - I think this is why it will be difficult for Apple to grab much of the market. > What Apple can bring to that is a single offering at a time (in 2 or 3 > under the skin variations) and simplify the whole thing. I think you misunderstand my point. If you go look at dpreview the
choices are overwhelming. People trying to figure out what to get have
so many choices that it's frustrating and hard to get it right for
someone who doesn't understand the specs.
But if Apple comes along (and in their true marketing whiz-bang way)
makes a product that doesn't need to be understood per se, it's Apple.
Period. And of course it will be an ace at P&S photography and do most
things more than well enough for most people.
People will chuck trying to decide what to buy on dpreview and take the
simple choice. Apple iSnap.
Most interesting is that with iOS there could suddenly be a plethora of
apps for such a phone to enhance what it can do. (As there are many
apps for the iphone that take photos - some well, others ...)^.
Make a phone, slap the Apple logo on it with iOS inside with all the
iPad-esque stuff built it (indeed a fast link to the iPad) and people
will just get it and make do. Cue the Reality Distortion Field
commercials and watch everyone else's sales crash.
^It's germane to note that most Canon P&S cameras can be re-programmed
to a degree ( http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ ).
