Clarus turns 30. It was in 1984 that the first Macintosh was introduce, delivered with the Cairo font. The "dingbats" fonts embed the z glyph resenting a strange and small animal : the DogCow. This animal will have a long destiny inside Apple Labs, becoming the represntation of paper orientation inside the LaserWriter driver (for the first Laser printer in 1986). The in 1987, she became the mascot of DTS team inside Apple tech labs. And was also the star of the WWDC 1988. In 1991, the QuickTime developer team adopt here as the star in their forst QuickTime demo movies. After Steve Jobs return (1998), she progressivly disappears from Apple and Macintosh. her last known reference in Apple was in 2004. I no longer see "Moof" on Apple's trademark page, but that is clearly stated as being "a non-exhaustive list," so it could be that the term is still trademarked but they no longer bother to list it on that page. Yes, you're right "Moof!" and "DogCow" were no more listed in the trademark list on Apple web site (since 2010, thansk to archives.org memory). But yes Apple also told that the list was not complete (so why put a list, it's a different story). I once wrote to Apple to ask on the legal status of "Moof!" and "Dogcow" but i never get any answer... So yes it could still be registered... or not. But she didn't get named until Apple formed the Claris corporation; the name "Clarus" was a pun on "Claris" because most of Apple's developers didn't think all too much about Claris corporation.

The story is not so clear, but according to official history (TechNote
31 and mark harlan "History of the DogCow").
The species (DogCow) appeared in 1987 (also Moof) under Scott Zimmermann
and Mark Harlan discussions.
She get named (Clarus) in 1989 in the famous TechNotes 31 (the name was
revealed to public and yes it was related to Claris Division).
But there was also terrified story around her :
Trollaxor told us an alternative story in 2002:

There's plenty of dogs around like that. Our own dog when it was a puppy was white with auburn ears and an auburn patch on its chest, but the auburn has faded out as it grew older (still faintly visible on the ears, especially after a haircut).
