#62329 — hi-res finder icons?

Subjecthi-res finder icons?
Message-ID<200720141934233698%whanna@invalid.invalid>
i'm creating fractal art with Frax Pro on the ipad.

i have hi-res images rendered at Frax which i then DL from the web.

the DLed file (8192 x 6144 px) has a finder icon that looks really
great at full size.

however, after processing themin PS6 and saving as TIF files, the
finder icons look like crap... very pixelated.

is this a PS6 problem or something else?

how can i rectify this this?

any help appreciated.

thanks

bill

Maybe you need to change the icon size View Options preference for that
folder / window.

It's possible that Photoshop 6 doesn't save "hi-res" icons as part of
the icon set. You could try turning off Photoshops option to create an
icon and let the Finder do it itself (assuming it's a standard image
file-type).

> in column view the icons are large and beautiful

If you mean the right-most pane in Column View, then that's usually a
preview of the image file itself rather than the icon. It's only an
icon for files that Finder / Preview doesn't know about.

thanks Name

turning off PS icons works... sorta

all the detail that was missing is there now, but there's
a white border around the icon which results is a smaller
image

but it's way better than before

do you know of a way to eliminate the border?

thanks again

This is how OS X renders the icons. I don't think it can be
turned off, but if it can, I'd like to know.

Use Graphic Converter to create the icons. It has a batch mode
so you can do entire directories (folders) of images. Be sure to
turn off the border in GC's preferences - Save:Resource Fork.
Here you can also select various icon sizes.

You can try it without cost, and even continue to use it with
a 30 second startup wait as long as you'd like.

Simply doing a "convert" to a new file (with no batch steps) should add
the icon, as long as the option is turned on in Graphic Converter's
preferences, there's also an option as to whether you want the icon to
be dog-eared or have a black border.

The nagging opening splash window used to stay open for longer the
longer you used the application without paying. Not sure if it still
does that with the newer versions.

When it starts up, if you see the "First Steps" splash screen, click on
"Do a batch conversion." If you don't see this, click on the File menu
item, and select Convert & Modify. Once that comes up, near the upper
left corner you'll see Function: with a drop down menu. In that menu
select Create Icon/Preview. Then, in the upper center of the screen
you'll see an item that says From: - click on this, navigate to the
folder containing the items you'd like to add icons, then, once they've
appeared in the box below the From:, select all of them (Command-A, for
example, will do this), then in the lower left corner of this screen,
there is a button labeled Go. Click that, and the icons will be
created.

Be sure to set the previously mentioned preferences to your taste
first.

Photoshop 6 does not produce full size icons. I believe the maximum is
64x64, but it could be 32x32. OS X supports 256x256 icons.

> how can i rectify this this?

Don't edit them in PS6. Pixelmator gets good reviews. There's also Acorn
and Flare, IIRC. Heck, Graphic Converter as well, depending on what you
need to do.

photoshop 6 is 15 years old.

assuming you mean photoshop cs6, it creates 256x256 icons. it also
creates an image preview.

> OS X supports 256x256 icons.

1024x1024 for retina, 512x512 non-retina.

yes... i meant cs6

256x256 would explain why they look bad

so... that's the limit in PS CS6?

thanks
