Doesn't using the theme song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
constitute a mention of Christmas?

Can't miss one little opportunity to shove our superstitions into the
faces of rational people, can we?

There are hundreds of millions of children who will not be dreaming of
sugar plums while nestled all snug in the beds Tuesday night. A few
billion people won't be exchanging presents or singing songs or
attending church services the next day, because they're not Christians.
I know that's impossible for you to contemplate, because Christianity to
you is like water to fish, so I won't even ask you to try.

But really, how is it any skin off your nose if people say "Happy
Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas"? It seems remarkably churlish of
you to insist on a specific greeting, and not at all in keeping with the
spirit of the holiday you profess to be celebrating.

When you're on a mission from god to cram your superstition down
everyone's throat, it becomes important. The ignoramuses don't even
know that "Happy Holidays" = "Happy Holy Days."

Umm, holy days in ye olde calendar, at least in not-so-merry Olde
Englande, weren't meant to be "happy". They were supposed to be spent
cleaning the house and yourself, putting on your least holey shirt,
spending most of the day in church and spending the rest of it in
quiet contemplative prayers.
Wishing one a "tranquil holy day" would be more in keeping with
tradition. Or perhaps "solemn" would be better.
There are people who still mark holy days quietly.
Even in the middle of Commercial Christmas.

What does that have to do with the early 21st century? Do you know how
to pronounce "ye" in "ye olde?"

 I am *not* Christian.
In the slightest. In any way, shape, form, bit or fashion. I am no
more Christian than an adherent to the Church of Klono.
Possibly less so. Klono strikes me as being the more fun deity.

How simple can it get? It's been Christmas for centuries. It's still
Christmas. Just because your TV guys are too scared of losing
advertising revenue and the fear has spread to every other corner of
your country it hasn't suddenly *stopped* being Christmas. The
celebration is "Christmas", not "Holiday".
 Christmas Pudding, not holiday pudding.
Christmas Markets not holiday markets. If they were holiday markets
they would be shut as all the marketeers would be away skiing.
Yule logs not ... yes, well, that one's even older.
And as far as the spirit goes, I bought some toffee vodka and some
local beers. Both are gorgeous. I don't drink much, maybe a small
glass of toffee-vodka or a beer once every several months but they are
nice when I do.
Maybe that's my problem? Maybe I need to drink more? Mellow out
considerably? Hey, any excuse, right?

And why do I care about this at all? It's just one more blandisation,
one more whitewashing, one more scrubbing out of our history and
heritage and language and culture in the name of the great god of TV
advertising and its spin-offs.
Mustn't show a nipple. Mustn't say bad words and definitely mustn't
piss off the multi-culturalist ethnics.
And I'm no churl, I own property. When I'm pissy, pouty, petty and
nasty I'm *lordly*. Or maybe ethnic.
                                  J.

Merry Christmas to one and all. And a truly happy new year to
everyone.

Unless it's Yule/Solstice or Chanukkah or Kwanzaa, or Festivus, or
maybe some other holiday that I've not heard of.

When someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, they're making an erroneous
assumption about me.

Sorry but I'm not. I know only about you that which you have chosen
to reveal in these newsgroups and so far as I know (or assume) you
could be lying about all of it, could be a four-hundred kilo sweaty
male nerd living in his mother's basement and might never even have
*seen* a Mac.
Wishing you a "Merry Christmas" says I was born and have lived in a
culture that calls the Winter Festival of Returning Light "Christmas".
It says *nothing* at all about you. It doesn't even assume you can
read English.
I know and assume nothing of your culture, your creeds if any or your
nature. I do know of mine. Somewhat.
Wishing you "Merry Christmas" is a good thing. It's a warm, human
thing. It's saying that I hope you're happy next Wednesday. I do hope
you're happy *every* Wednesday, and all the days between them but
that's possibly too much to expect of this world.
 It's a metaphysical hug. A metaphorical raising of a glass. A small
blessing for whatever it is worth and a blessing from me can't be
worth much.
Wishing you "Merry Christmas" does not assume you're Christian, or
that you'll get merry or even that misery isn't your long-time and
constant companion and your only one. It is a gentle reaching out of a
hand to pat yours softly.
It is seasonal shorthand for "I hope I find you well and happy and
you have my compassion if not and an offer of aid - such as I am able
to give - should you need and want it from such as me".

If you wish to rebuff the good wishes, feel free.
 Merry Solstice. Happy JosephSmithDay.
                                                   J.

Yes, you are.

It assumes that I celebrate or observe Christmas. If I said "Happy
Chanukkah" to you, it would mean that I assumed that you were Jewish.

> I know and assume nothing of your culture, your creeds if any or your

By saying "Merry Christmas" to me, you are assuming that I celebrate or
observe Christmas.

"Happy holidays" conveys the same message without the assumption about
which holiday I might be celebrating or observing.

All that said, I'd rather someone wish me a Merry Christmas than ignore
me, but if someone does, I'll know that person is assuming that I'm
Christian. In the normal course of events, with the majority of people
who do that, I'll not make an issue of it, but with a select few, I'll
politely explain that I'm not Christian and that Christmas is not my
Holy Day.

By saying "Happy holidays" you are assuming that I "celebrate"
*anything* in December / January. Personally I don't bother with any of
the over-bloated "seasonal" excuses for retailers to cash-in. :-)

For people who are alone, homeless, etc. even "Happy holidays" can also
be a bad reminder of everything they haven't got.

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for
an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress,
non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice
holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious
persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with
respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of
others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions
at all . . . and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and
medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally
accepted calendar year 2014, but not without due respect for the
calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society
have helped make America great, (not to imply that America is
necessarily greater than any other country or is the only “AMERICA” in
the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color,
age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or
sexual orientation of the wishee. This message does not advocate the
exploitation of non-union working class elves, or other handicapped
persons. This message is respectful to the rights of reindeer and other
animals, and not advocate the use of fur.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely
transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no
promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for
her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is
revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted
to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for
a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday
greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement
of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the
wisher.

Almost, but not quite there.

To be fully "Politically Correct", you still need to add in a bit that
explicitly states the greeting is sent in an environmentally friendly
way (i.e. no trees were chopped down), and you have to add translations
into every known language. Plus, by singling out "elves" and
"reindeer", you are being mytical-biengist and animalist. ;-)

And they should not be placed as "possessive" when not intended as such, as
well.
