Actually, it began when you decided to take your new Mac to an as yet unnamed shop, which you claim specializes in Macs; a claim I'm rather loath to accept. From your descriptions, you requested that $SHOP copy all your data from the old Mac to the new one. As some of the items thus copied were not usable, in the form in which they existed under Snow Leopard, it's no wonder 'nothing works' has become your mantra. You and your 'Mac specialist' managed to turn your new Mac into something so FUBAR, it's no wonder you're having problem, which you incorrectly blame on Yosemite. The actual blame rests entirely upon you and your choices, actions and faulty assumptions regarding how things work. At this point, a clean install of the Yosemite OS may be your best starting point, followed by a Genius Bar appointment, at your nearest Apple Store. The recommendation I've made to you, repeatedly, is to take your entire kit to a bricks and mortar Apple Store, for an appointment with a Mac Genius, something you are obviously not. With both your old laptop, running OS X 10.6.x, and your "new computer," running OS X 10.10.x, your Genius can perform the _migration_ from your old to new Macs. While such a migration does copy all you documents, music, books and other media files, to the new computer, they may get filed in new locations. While some of your applications will copy, those which were written to run on PPCs and require Rosetta, to run under Snow Leopard, such as MT-NW, may not. (After all these years, a good culling of accumulated cruft seems long overdue.) The migration may take several hours, depending on how much data is being copied in the migration process. In order to perform a migration, the two computers need to be connected to each other. You'll need the assistance of a Mac Genius, to show you how, as doing so is well beyond your severely limited technical skill set. A migration can also be accomplished from a Time Machine backup, but I suspect you don't backup anything. If you do have Time Machine backups, of your Mac running Snow Leopard, you could bring the outboard drive, instead of your laptop, for the migration. Once the _migration_ completes, another Genius Bar appointment would appear to be required, to migrate your iPad to the Yosemite box. Again, depending on how much data you store on your iPad, will determine how long configuration and synchronization to the Yosemite will take. Have this done by the pros, as you'll undoubtedly turn the process FUBAR, if left to your own devices. An Apple store is not an 'iStore', as you refer to it. It can provide you with the professional technical assistance and training, you so desperately need. I bought the new laptop at the same place where I have purchased hardware and satisfactory service for a decade now with a different plan in mind which proved impossible to implement. The resulting problems are not their fault and taking it back will not cure them. The problem is Yosemite, whether or not you happen to believe it. I am grossly disappointed in this alleged "upgrade" and its versions of software I was perfectly happy with. The old laptop was almost full and admittedly a bit old as computers go. I was not looking forward to getting used to new software, but I did not expect every piece of it I had major use for to be inferior to older software. Some people eagerly adopt these "upgrades" just because they are new. I am not such a person. You've jumped multiple OS X versions, and were previously running OS X 10.6, so most of your old applications which don't work any more were due to 10.7 and later no longer supporting PowerPC-only applications. Complaining about Yosemite (or Mavericks) is not helpful - you would have had almost as many non-working old applications if you had got a new Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion, and probably the same number if your new Mac was running Mavericks. MT-Newswatcher is the only application I know of which was broken by Apple removing Open Transport networking in Mavericks (which is what was being talked about in this sub-thread). I generally keep my applications up to date, and upgrade to new major OS X versions as soon as I've had time to test and ensure my important applications are working (typically one to two weeks after the new OS X version is released). Abandoned PowerPC-only applications were my main stumbling block in upgrading to 10.7. It took me ten months to finally give up hope of a viable Eudora workalike, and I switched to Apple Mail. I've retained access to other occasionally used PowerPC applications by having a copy of Snow Leopard Server running in a virtual machine (plus I have older Macs which can run older Mac OS and Mac OS X versions if necessary). > And I have yet to get ANY newsgroup reader working in Yosemite. As you say, not really elegant, but it does work across all platforms. I used it when I had OS/2 and on Linux before I went with Pan.

They took special measures to make sure Server Monitor and Server Admin were disabled (and deleted from clients), removing the ability to manage older servers. However, for iPhoto/Aperture, they not only kept the two during install, but they also architected the new one to share the photos between old and new (although with different indexes from what I heard) Once you start using Photos, the photos you add to it are not indexed into iPhoto so that app becomes useless and Apple probably figures that once Photos becomes good enough, users will abandon iPhoto on their own. Until then, they will let both co-exist. Whether they will eventually pull the plug on iphoto remains to be seen.

No. The new Photos.app is added, and both iPhoto and Aperture are still there and can still be used. Sidebar: as expected, Apple has removed iPhoto and Aperture from App Store, but they are still available via the Purchases list if you already had them from App Store. I don't know whether it is still possible to upgrade from a DVD install of iLife '11 to the App Store version of iPhoto, or similarly for the retail Aperture 3, but I wouldn't be surprised if that has gone away. > Or can both products be used after upgrading? Yes, but there are some potential complications depending on how you use each application. You can optionally import your existing iPhoto or Aperture library into Photos. That creates a duplicate of the existing library, but it doesn't double the disk space required: hard links are used to refer to the original photos, so the photos themselves don't occupy any more space, just the metadata and structural information needed by the Photos library. After the library is imported, you will have two libraries (one for iPhoto/Aperture and one for Photos) which operate independently. Any subsequent changes made in iPhoto/Aperture will not affect Photos, and vice versa. For example, after importing your library into Photos, if you then used iPhoto to import some new photos, they would not automatically appear in Photos. You would have to also import them using Photos. You can even delete either library without affecting the other one. I'm not sure yet what happens with syncing photos to iOS devices via iTunes. Presumably iPhoto or Aperture can still be used as a source, but there wasn't an iTunes update at the same time, so it might not support direct syncing from Photos.
