#46776 — remove the Finder from the Dock?

Subjectremove the Finder from the Dock?

Is there any way to remove the Finder from the Dock?

The Finder has been very slow on Mountain Lion and I'd rather not be tempted to click on it.

Thanks.

If you can't resist the urge to click on the Finder icon in the Dock
just because it's there, this is not a computer problem; it may be
treatable compulsive behaviour.

The more interesting question is "why is the Finder very slow on your
machine?" Do you have "Calculate all sizes" turned on in the View
Options? (That's a well-known source of Finder sluggishness, at least in
older versions of OS X).

What is it about Finder that has people wanting to put the word "The" in
front of it? I never hear "The Mail" "The Automator" "The Calendar" "The
Safari" or "The Contacts".

If Finder was a country it would be Ukraine.

Perhaps because Finder is a feature of the OS which is always running
(under normal conditions), like "The Desktop", "The Dock", "The Apple
Menu" and "The Menu Bar".

I haven't heard "the" in front of other standard features like "System
Preferences", "Spotlight", "Mission Control", "LaunchPad".

I think the distinction is whether the word is regarded as a name or a
description. Some people think of "Finder" as the name of an
application, whereas "The Finder" is derived from its functionality.

I'd normally use "Finder" but might occasionally refer to it as "the
Finder", especially in response to someone who has just used that form.

Because it is a particularly unique program at the heart of the OS,
use of "the" connotes a knowing familiarity, ... still, your question
is not too bad a one! By the way, in the subject, the word was spelt
with a small "t", not quite the same thing ("The" would suggest actual
confusion with the name of Finder).

Perhaps, if it wasn't The Sudan or The Yemen, The United Arab Emirates,
The United Kingdom, The United States, The Congo, or The Netherlands.

The answer to your question is that The Mail, The Automator, The
Safari, and some others don't sound quite right. "The Finder" sounds
just fine, but if you disagree, then you should most certainly call it
"Finder."

Sometimes omitting "the" can make for a clumsy sentence. "What time is
the Smith's party?" "I forget. Check Calendar." Not so good, IMO. "I
forget. Check the Calendar." "To copy a file, you must first open
Finder." Acceptable, perhaps, but "To copy a file, you must first open
the Finder" sounds better to me.

I think it's the "er" ending. If Mail were called Mailer, I think people
might call it "the Mailer" (in fact, this expression is often used to
refer to the mail daemon that runs on servers). When a term describes
what someone does, we often refer to them with an article, as in "call
the plumber to fix the pipe."

I think you've got it. There was also, IIRC, the Chooser.

Interesting theory.

Do folks in the Windows world say "The Explorer"?

I'm pretty sure I recall Apple calling it "the Finder" when it first
came to be, no?

The earliest reference I find to the function is in "Macintosh Technical
Note #28", written on May 7, 1984 and updated on March 1, 1988. This
document refers to "Finder" when referring to specific versions,
"Finders 4.1 and newer issue...", and to "the Finder" when discussing
the function generically, as in "The Finder will clean up the disk..."

The next TechNote, #29, is entitled "The Finder Interface".

My earliest software documentation is Microsoft Office 5.0, from 1992.
This, also, refers to both "Finder" and "the Finder".

From my reading, I draw four conclusions:
1.) Citing historical usage will probably lead to a flame war.
2.) We are probably safe using either method to refer to the software.
3.) Someone who spends his time searching for information like this
probably has too few worthwhile things to do.
4.) TechNote #31, "The DogCow" hearkens back to a time when using the
Mac was a lot more light-hearted.

I find that emptying the cache folders in /Library and /user/Library
helps slow computers a lot. After a while they accumulate thousands of
useless files.

In my /Library, there is 647 KB, in my user/library there is 1.75 GB
(half a GB from Safari!, web page previews counting for nearly 300MB
(jpgs and pngs mainly). Not sure why they would bother Finder though,
unless they are taking up so much space on the HD that it influences
use of the HD for virtual memory tasks.

Do you clean them out manually (like I just deleted all the web
previews because I was there and felt like it)?

It's not the amount of data that slows things down but the number of
files in the folder(s).

A tool like Onyx will do it for you as well as some other cleanup tasks.

It may make you feel better, but it will not impact your system's
performance.

I just delete everything in the cache folders. Cmd-A; Cmd-delete;
restart; empty trash.

I noticed on one of my computers, Safari was causing a lot of disk
activity. Even on blank pages, the HD was constantly clicking. Not with
Chrome. Emptying the cache folders solved it.

Also, I noticed that deleting these caches took away sluggishness in
general. I never noticed anything negative from this action. I did not
lose any passwords or preferences or settings in any application.
