I'm trying to get Mavericks from the Mac Apps store and I've gotten to the point where the DOwnload button says "Downloading," but there's no progress bar to show how far along it is. How long should I expect it to take and how will I know when it's done?

First is dwnloading Mavericks and then all the application updates that follow. Hopefully the new Mavericks download is for 10.9.1 right off the bat, otherwise you will have to update from 10.9.0 to 10.9.1. IMHO Apple's download-only approach sucks. Not all of their customers have access to broadband with enough speed to make this sort of thing reasonable. Hell, the US is one of the worst of the developed countries when it comes to broadband speed while providers charge some of the highest prices. We're Number One (at paying more for less).

We're Number One (at paying more for less). not enough to matter. when apple offered lion in both a downloadable version and a usb stick, very few people bought the usb stick. you can always go somewhere where there is faster connectivity, such as an apple store, and download it there.

And a large chunk of the user base did NOT upgrade and stayed at Snow Leopard. (Roughly 33% as I recall). As I recall, the USB sticks were available only at stores, not orderable on-line (is that correct ?) which means anyone not within walking distance of a store couldn't get one. That is definitely one way to prevent any demand for the non-internet distribution of media. If a dispropoprtionate number who stayed at Snow Leopard did so due to inability to upgrade on-line, then this is a far bigger number than those who bought the USB kit.

No; you can buy it from Amazon.com. > which means anyone not within walking distance of a store couldn't > get one. I'm within walking distance of an Apple Store, but I'm within a 20-minute drive from two of them. And in places like NYC and San Francisco, there are subways, light rail, and busses. Not being within walking distance is not an issue for many Mac users.

Like any misleading and inaccurate statistical figure from polls / surveys, it's largely a manipulated guesswork based on a tiny fraction of real users. There's no way they can ever know how many users there are.

It's not difficult to make your own bootable USB installer with any version, but you have to have the OS first, of course. But for future use, it's nice to be able to install it from a flash drive.

They (brackets) don't always work for everyone. I don't have a problem with them. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. I have to copy and paste. It's worse when a long URL is in a quoted area. I have to remove a ">" and a few spaces from the copied text to fix the URL. > complain to the author to fix it or use non-broken software. It's unlikely to ever be fixed in a terminal-based newsreader, but I like tin well enough to put up with it. -- K. Lang may your lum reek.
