Assuming you know exactly when the save was done without your knowledge
and assuming that the application uses that "versions" thing and
assuming you know exactly what version you should be using to ensure
your contents ate 100% those before you accidentally pressed the space
bar while reading a document. And this assumes you will regain
modification dates of the unodified document.

The amount of disk space it wastes is proportional to the amount of time
spent editing. It is totally screwed up in Mail, creating half a dozen
new drafts (in the drafts folder) in the time it takes to type
a twenty-line message. After sending the final, they remain there until
manually deleted. (Oddly though, it doesn't do that for every message,
and I haven't figured out what makes the difference.)

The amount of CPU time it wastes--well, I don't know. But I hate waste.

I shouldn't have to. That is a waste of my time. And I hate waste.

The last time I used anything similar to Spaces was CDE on Solaris
around 1990. I was not impressed. Exposé is nice when I need it, which
is almost never. The rest of the time, accidentally triggering it
wastes my time and pisses me off. So its minor benefit is far
outweighed by its getting in the way.

THOSE I would probably like if I had a trackpad. But I have an iPad, an
iPhone, and a Macbook, so I am familiar with the concept--and find them
convenient but not enough to drive me to apple.com to order one.

Meh.

I actually did think that was great when I saw it. But now, all these
months later, I find that I have not used it even once.

I would love that if I were an admin for others. But I'm not, From the
very beginning it irritated me that Mac OS was one user at a time.
More as a purist then as someone who would actually use it. :-)

I would like it if it weren't buggy. Before I got it mostly disabled,
items I had used recently but had finished with and closed were coming
back and cluttering up the screen. Now that I have it disabled, it
still happens but only once in a long while.

My Drafts mailbox is empty. *VERY* occasionally, like a handful of times
a year, I may see a stray message in there that shouldn't be there.

You said harmful. A couple of seconds to revert to a previous version
does not fit my definition of harmful.

When was it ever one user at a time? Sure, the GUI was limited to one
user, but you *could* do almost anything from the command line if you
needed to.

Doesn't match my experience at all. Resume has been flawless.

I have seen this happen on my computer, but of the hundreds of email I
send every week, this happens less often than once per week. So
something is buggy, yes, but it isn't that the default behavior in
this case (writing messages in Mail) is stupid.

Saving a dozen drafts during composition is stupid.

Occasionally failing to clean them up is a bug.

The method of cleaning up--moving them to the trash mailbox--is also stupid.

I did find the CDE equivalent of Spaces useful, but that was in the
context of managing several clusters, so I could reserve separate windows
for each. I am also finding it handy on this Linux system to group
related apps together and hide them when I am working on them.

I don't think I have ever used Exposé. I solved the problem of
accidentally triggering it by assigning the key combination to toggle
keyboard layouts. The default suggested happened to collide with the
Exposé shortcut and I was happy with that.

There is one thing that would persuade me to use Spaces or Fences or
whatever all the other names are. And that is easy access to a log of
times each Space got focus. That would be a wonderful way to keep track
of time spent actively working on a project.

There's a Linux feature called Zeitgeist which is an activity logger.
Its reporting side was still very much in development / beta status last
time I looked at it, and I had to download the latest snapshots to get an
idea of what it was capable of. It was telling me what files I had
worked on and when. I don't think it could tell you how much time was
spent actively working with a particular file, but it was a start.

Seriously. And it's not the width of scrollbars, but the loss of
functionality in the Lion scrollbars. And the change in functionality
in the touchpad between SL and Lion. And auto-save, which I hear is
kind of fixed in ML. And other things, such as loss of performance and
loss of Rosetta.

We can tell you the substance all week, but if you won't listen, I guess
you won't hear it.

I have had a look and don't like it either. Its supporters claim you can
simply bang the mouse in a corner and get what you want but try doing
that from a remote session or in a virtual client and see how far you get.

To be honest while MS still have all on persuading businesses to upgrade
from XP to Windows 7, I am not sure they care about business users where
Windows 8 is concerned.

Oh, Windows Server 2012 gets that interface too. While that product
contains enhancements that will be useful in the server world, the
interface puts me right off, and I suspect I am far from alone.

About how Mountain Lion adds a couple of checkboxes in System

That might work for video poker, but Mr. Browne went on to mention two
people who rely on certain Windows-only accounting software. Virtually
all professional-level accounting software is Windows-only; you are
very unlikely to see an accounting firm using Macs. Accountants are
justifiably hyper-conservative on maintaining the integrity their
databases. There is no way an accountant is going to switch to the Mac
OS, and with very good reasons. They run the risk of ruining the trust
they have built with their clients over the years, and with it their
reputations and business.

Kurt Ullman:
> Serious question: How?

Loss of data. Inability on the part of the accountant to produce
reports and archived records instantaneously when a commercial or
government auditor walks into the clients' office. The client does not
want to hear "We're just changing platforms and that report isn't
available right now" or "We're learning new software and that report
isn't available right now." How about "Your employees are going to be
paid a few days late this period due to a software change?" Just about
any answer other than "Give me a few seconds, please. (Click, Click)
OK, your data is in your inbox now" can lose a client for an accounting
firm.

Not to mention that there is no enterprise-grade accounting software
for the Mac. Look at a company that is a big user of Macs, such as one
of the biotech companies. The lab may be all-Mac, the CEO has a Mac on
his desk, but the company bean counters almost certainly use Windows.

The accounting firms are ultra-conservative (the reputable ones, I
mean), but the developers of enterprise-grade accounting software are
perhaps even more conservative. They weren't going to develop for the
Mac when it had 2% of the market, so the Mac was never on their radar,
and probably never will be. Enterprise-grade accounting software is
necessarily among the most reliable and bug-free of all commercial
software. One of my graphics clients, who is also a personal friend,
owns an accounting firm and she tells me that she has used various
iterations of the same software (from a company you and I have never
heard of) from the advent of the IBM PC and she has never had it crash
or perform in an unexpected manner. That's an impressive record, a sign
of the conservatism of the developer. These people also don't update
their OS's unless forced to; if you've been using a certain software
package with Windows XP for the past 11 years and it has performed
flawlessly, you're not going to move everything to Win 7 or 8 until
forced to do so.

Haven't many software companies been rewriting most desktop applications
to online versions? I'll bet whatever applications they're using now
have versions that can be run on a server, and accessed from any desktop
with a browser.

Unfortunately, some of these apps depend on Active-X controls, which
still ties them to Windows and IE.

Many? Perhaps. Most desktop applications? Not yet. It would be
interesting to learn how Adobe's cloud apps are doing with graphics
professionals. I'm not a graphics professional because I don't have
significant income from graphics work though I supply scientific
photographs
<http://www.flickr.com/photos/primeval/7749871750/in/photostream/lightbo
x/> to not-for-profits at no charge, and once in a while someone sees
one of my photos on-line and buys usage rights for a book or magazine.
Once I have promised someone that they will receive such-and-such photo
at such-and-such resolution on such-and-such date I am honor-bound to
deliver as promised.

I'm not yet ready to trust that edited photo entirely to the cloud,
though I don't mind putting a copy of it into Dropbox for the client to
pick up at her convenience; after all, it's only a copy and it has
multiple back-ups. If I'm going to edit the photo with Photoshop in the
cloud and still keep local backups, then why do I need the cloud? Use
of Adobe Creative Suite 6 apps in Adobe's "Creative Cloud" costs $600
per annum, including a paltry 20 GB of storage. (The master version of
the Flickr photo referenced above is more than 1 GB in size.) That
price seems a bit high to me; I paid $950 for the update to CS 6 Design
and Web Premium. It may be a bargain for a large company that saves on
IT support costs, however.

I may live long enough to laugh at the day when I kept my files on my
own storage media, just as I laugh at the era of the 1.4 MB floppy.

Windows-using accountants (i.e., all accountants) are even more
conservative than I am and they will likely be the last people on Earth
to trust the cloud for their clients' data.

I wasn't talking about moving to the cloud, I meant the applications
would be run on corporate servers, with the web browser as a thin client.
