what you still miss (and probably will never grasp) is if it's an
iphone app, why not just run it on an iphone. why run it at all on an
ipad if it's not designed for it?

and if you are going to say 'but what if they don't have an iphone'
then that's an even smaller group that you are trying to cater to.

there's a reason it's called a compatibility mode.

Because I'm using my iPad, and I don't want to put it down, take out my
iPhone, use the app, put the iPhone away, and pick up the iPad again.

Or maybe it's because I want to copy something (e.g., text or a
graphic) from the iPhone app and paste it into an iPad app.

Believe it or not, there are people with an iPad but not an iPhone!

Yes, the point of the discussion was wanting a setting to prevent those
apps from being installed on an iPad without having to manually manage
apps.

The only app I have on my iPad that is a iPhone app is a spare weather
app that I have because its alerts system is more reliable than the
other apps. I never actually launch the app though, it's only there for
the notifications.

And if you can manage to figure out a way for the iPad to know a priori
which iPhone apps you want to be automatically downloaded and which you
don't, you can make a fortune selling that patent to Apple.

I (and others) explained exactly what we want.

Apps that run only at phone size and have a 1X 2X setting on the iPad?
Those apps? Yeah, would like a preference so that auto-install ignores
those apps. That is, that auto install only auto-installs apps that run
at native resolution on the device.

Very simple.

extremely simple.

in preferences, have the following:

___ wirelessly sync all apps
_x_ wirelessly sync native apps only
___ manually manage apps

Thing is that there are apps that that run only at phone size and have
a 1X 2X setting on the iPad that some people want on their iPads. I'd
hazard that there are more people who want some of them than there are
people who don't want any of them.

based on what, exactly?

if that were the case, why do so many people bitch about not having
native ipad apps?

Gut feeling; same as the base for your stance.

Non sequitur; your question has nothing to do with the premise.

partly, but a lot of it is being in the developer circuit and hearing
user feedback from users of many different developers.

a *lot* of people prefer native apps. that's why developers spend so
much time making an ipad native app.

otherwise, developers could just say 'run the iphone app, it's just as
good.'

it has *everything* to do with it.

the fact that people bitch about it means they don't want iphone apps
on their ipads.

they want native ipad apps, which is why developers take the time to
write ipad native apps.

You're in the developer circuit?

Yup, no argument or disagreement there. I'm not saying that developers
shouldn't make universal apps.

Right, but if there isn't an iPad version of the app, and there isn't a
universal version of the app, and they want to run the app in their
iPad, why in the world do you want to make it hard for them to do that?

i'm not making it hard for anyone.

i want to make it *easier* for a substantial number of people.

this may come to you as a surprise but not everyone wants the same
thing, which is why there should be a choice where people can choose
what works best for them.

right now, the choices are all or nothing. there needs to be another
choice, where native apps are installed and non-native apps are
skipped.

why are you opposed to that? why do you want to force your personal
preference onto everyone? it's *you* who is making it hard for people.

no you didn't. what you showed doesn't even address the actual issue.

A few. Few enough to install manually. Or to not enable the preference I
want.

I seriously doubt it. Everyone I know gets pissed when they accidentally
get a iPhone app on their iPad.

same here, and often app reviews will knock off points because there is
no ipad version.
