#52947 — Sleep unmounts hard drives improperly

I'm using a 2.7 GHz iMac running 10.9. I noticed my machine wasn't
actually going to sleep, so I went into the preferences and saw sleep
was turned off. Huh. Wonder why I did that. I turned it back on, and
discovered why: on waking from sleep, I received the error message that
one of my drives had been ejected improperly. That's a bad thing. I
have two external USB drives hooked up at the moment. Is there some
setting I might be missing here?

I have a separately powered 3TB external USB drive for Time Machine and
Superduper! clone backups of my MacBookPro. It goes to sleep when I
shut the lid and wakes with this drive attached just fine. I'm running
10.8.5. I don't have the "Put hard drives to sleep when possible"
option checked in my Energy Saver settings. I don't know if there's an
equivalent on 10.9.

The only remotely relevant setting for this is the hard drives sleep. I
googled "Mavericks USB drives eject on sleep" and got this topic:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/23498109#23498109

Seems like it's a bug.

Interesting. Thanks. I'm amused that the given solution, "resetting the
System Management Controller", doesn't list this as one of the things
it could fix on Apple's support page:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I'm going to turn off having the hard drives sleep for now and see if
that works. Thanks.

What make and model is the drive enclosure mentioned in the error
message?
