In Canada, there was a company in Montréal called CAMCO which made fridges for everyone, from GE, Simpsons/Sears, Eatons, Whirlpool etc. (I think they served only the canadian market). Consider that today, there are equivalents to Foxconn for fridges and washing machines in China. Not sure what the status of GE home appliances is. They have been trying to sell that division for ages. Back on topic: Imagine if Apple spun off the Xserve division into a separarte Apple subsidiary. It could have continued to make server products that work well within the Apple ecosystem, and Steve Jobs (it was under Jobs that Apple exited server market) wouldn't have had to worry about it.

A specific server model is rather pointless and sell even less than the Mac Pro. There are companies that sell rack mounts for both Mac Mini and Mac Pro models - I read about a new rack yesterday that has been designed to hold something like 48 Mac Pros.

They wouldn't let you put in equipment not designed to be rack mounted, and this is on a cooling point of view. New generation racks have a hot zone in back and a cold zone in front. Racks are back to back, so the aisle between 2 backs is very hot, and the aisle between 2 fronts is very cold. Equipment MUST push air from cold to hot zone and not let hot air from the back bleed back to front. The old MacPro cabinet could do that but is extremely bulky and can't be maintained without being fully disconnected and pulled out. You don't want to have hundreds of such servers in racks. And because it takes so mucvh space you would be paying through the roof since data centres charge by the 1Us. the Minis don't have proper ventilation so you would have to have a rackmount kit with oproper ventilation and the minis inside.

As I said above, you can buy third-party options to rack mount both the Mac Mini and Mac Pro. These are professional systems designed specifically for server racks, so they likely cover any sensible requirements and are the appropriate size (they might take up two or three standard server units in height, but can give two or three servers in the width instead). By MacPro I meant the current cylindrical model, although I do vaguely recall rack mounts for the old "bulky" tower case as well. Of course the cylindrical MacPro is that there's very little storage space inside, so would also need external drives - that may or may not be a problem depending on what the servers are being used for (a "processor farm" for example doesn't need large individual server storage), although it would make swapping drives easier than the old tower model.

Okay, so one time? In band camp? Let's see, 42U per rack, at least 60 feet of racks, on both sides. How many minis? No fucking idea, but the word "shitton" comes to mind. Who knows, might have been more than just that row, but that's all I saw. > the Minis don't have proper ventilation so you would have to have a > rackmount kit with oproper ventilation and the minis inside. Something like this rack with 160 Mac minis? <https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/160-mac-mini-rack-01.jpg> Each rack hold 4 minis. -- http://2blog.kreme.com

I think I saw at least 3 Mitsubishi factories in Taiwan. And that's
nothing compared to mainland China.
Mitsubishi, like pretty much every Japanese product manufacturer, can't
afford to make its consumer products at home...

I just stated that in the server area, RH/Centos is the predominant player running on specialized Dell/HP RAID type server farms. I personally do not think that Apple needs, or should, try and compete in this area. Apple has made its mark in the consumer market, not the server/industrial market. That market is too specialized and already well taken care of by the players.
