A friend of mine has bought an old MacPro1.1 with only 6gb of installed
memory, so he bought a very cheap 'kit' of 8x 4gb Apple certified memory
moduels, Samsung DDR2 PC-5300 667mhz ECC FB DIMM 1,8v CL5,5 - i.e. the
correct type of memory with the large cooler ribbons.

Installed it and started up. Everything looked fine until suddenly the
macine shut down without any noticable reason. Just before shutting down
the fan started to act like a hurricane...

He is mostly using the machine for video rendering and making DVDs. He's
working as a semi-professional video photographer making wedding DVDs
using professional Panasonic Firewire compatible videocams and GoPro
cams. He's running 10.7.5 + Premiere Pro.

My guess is/was that it could be a cooling problem. So I advised him to
try with 1 pair at a time to see how it would behave. Right now he's
having 24gb installed and everything works just fine. This means that he
now has 6x 4gb modules - Riser A 1+2 & 3+4 + Riser B 1+2.

We've concluded that it must be Riser B 3+4 that may have a problem, but
none of us are that sure that the problem would be cured by replacing
Riser B. - A quick search on many pages with spareparts also showed that
it was mostly used Riser A's that were for sale and only pairs of new
Riser A+B are for sale.

There are lots discussions about the 24/32gb possibilities in a MP1.1
and MP2.1. - some say 16gb is max., some 24gb and some 32gb in a
MP1.1/2.1 DualCore Xeon with only 4 cores, but also that 32gb works fine
in the 8-core versions. This stated on the Apple discussion pages. And
as far as I can read the Apple tech pages, the risers in a MP1.1/2.1 are
/serial-coupled/ and not /paralle-coupled/. This means that Riser B 3+4
are the last slots in the chain. - From and included MP3.1 and up the
risers are /parallel-coupled/ - directly to the CPU...

So my question is... Has anyone here been able to run a MP1.1/2.1 4-core
with 32gb of physical memory? - If so, how? Did you use specific brands
etc.?

Cheers, Erik Richard
