I had the same problem, and tried a variety of the suggested fixes 
(including trashing various preferences, some of which were hard to 
find), with mediocre success, until I stumbled on the solution (for me) 
near the end of one long thread.  The problem was that Bluetooth 
interfered with wifi.  I don't use Bluetooth much but had accidentally 
left it on once.  So I turned it off and have had no problem since.  As 
I recall, the articles said the problem arises only in some hardware 
models -- I thought it was only just some laptops but it could be iMac's 
too.  I don't know what people who need to use Bluetooth can do.  In any 
case, it's surprising that the Mavericks upgrade caused the problem, but 
I suppose it has something to do with various wifi or Bluetooth rf 
parameters that got changed.
