All you need are good zero crossings.  I work with this every day,
in the form of SMPTE time code.  There has been a massive amount of
software written for this.  Out of 80 bits per frame, 16 are used
for a sync word, and the other 64 are data.  At 30 frames/second
(play speed for me), that's 240 bytes/second.  Going much faster
(as in shuttling tape), that's many more bytes/sec.
