Because if I (and the others - notice that you're pretty much the only one here advocating not backing up?) are wrong, and the hard drives never die, the cost of having backups was small. However, if you are wrong and the hard drives crash, the cost could be tremendous. And you're wrong. It's not "if" a hard drive crashes on someone. It's "when".
