Aside from the obvious > considerations of power consumption and size (it's not a noisy machine > by any means), are there any drawbacks to such a scheme? A Mac mini would be cheaper to purchase, and way cheaper to run due to much lower energy requirements and less heat output. I have a Drobo S with 17 TB of hard drives installed connected to a dual 2.5 Ghz Core i5 Mac mini (Late 2012) server that sits in my office closet without a monitor - I can connect to it with screen sharing, but rarely have the need. That Mac mini runs Yosemite with Mac OS X Server installed ($19 from the App Store), which provides most of the following services, though some I provide myself: file sharing, DNS, VPN, Apache, MySQL, Mail, Time Machine network backups for all Macs in the house, a caching server, Xcode git repositories, iTunes Home Sharing serving digital movies and television shows for all devices in the house (computers, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs connected to wide screen televisions, etc), my own custom home surveillance system, and just about anything else I need. I used to compile and configure all of the above by hand from open source packages and so on; but OS X Server is stable and robust enough now that I no longer need to do that, which saves me tons of time and sweat. The Mac mini is connected to an Airport Extreme dual band router and a Motorola SURFboard SB6121 cable modem (also in the closet) as well as an APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500 uninterruptible power supply that ensures a little over an hour of run time for all of the above so that I never lose my network connection during power outages. It's stable and just works the majority of the time. It's a pretty sweet setup in a small package. I love it. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
