I didn't say it took more energy, I said it still takes a lot of
energy. It's definitely not the all encompassing solution to pollution,
etc. that greenies like to blinker themesleves into believing (just
like electric cars).

Maybe it does take more to keep the computers, servers (all the servers
along the chain), telecoms equipment, etc. running 24-7, rather than a
limited production run of CDs or whatever. It's unlikely that anyone
has ever tested it properly.

Doing anything on your computer, especially anything Internet / network
related, WILL slow down the download, even if not really noticeably to
you. In some cases it can even cause the download to be aborted so you
have to start all over again ... and that's assuming your connection
doesn't fail for some reason (power cut, Internet "goes down", etc.).

Whether you use the computer or not, you still have to wait for the
download to finish.

Go to a shop, buy a box, come home ... it's not exactly rocket science.
Unless you live in a rural location or have a fast, efficient, non-data
capped Internet connection, it's almost certainly a lot quicker (even
ignoring clogged servers because every idiot is trying to download it
the minute after release) and cheaper in some cases .

In many (yes, not "all") past cases, companies have had the product in
the stores ready for the release announcement and when advertising
campaigns start.
