Most Windoze users run everything in fullscreen and click on the red
"X" in the corner to quit, so they carry on doing that when using a
Mac.

I haven't looked for Mac OS X, but there used to be a couple of
background applications for Mac OS 9 and older which properly quit an
application when you closed the last document window ... but that's an
annoyance for users who close the document their working on when they
want to start a whole new blank one.
