Three possible issues come immediately to mind:
- An older printer may no longer work. Some manufacturers
are extremely bad at updating drivers for their old
printers when new versions of OS X are released. You
might be able to work-around that with a third-party
hack, but you tend to lose some of the printer's
features.
- If you're still using any old PowerPC-based software.
Apple dropped Rosetta (the software which "translates"
PPC code to Intel code on the fly) when they released
Lion, so PowerPC-based applications will no longer work.
- With such a relatively big jump, you will almost
certainly find some of your old applications no longer
work properly or don't work at all, meaning that although
the OS upgrade might be free, there may be a substantial
cost in upgrading other software.
The best option is to usually clone your current boot disk to an
external drive so you can still reboot in Snow Leopard if needed. Then
(after making sure the clone actually works!) install the newer OS on
the internal drive.
