Those anti-competitive legalities seem to often be quite easy to
by-pass. There's a few examples here in New Zealand alone where company
buy-outs should never have been allowed under anti-competitive laws,
but they still happened. 

For example, although there are supermarket stores with nearly 10
different brandings, there's really only three parent companies that
own them (in at least one shopping mall, a company buy-out cause there
to be two supermarkets owned by the same parent company - the same
company that also caused years of legal delays trying to stop it's main
rival building a new supermarket a fair distance away).

There's a similar issue in electronics stores with buy-outs meaning
only a couple of parent companies own all the various brands, and again
in some cases ended up with two stores near to each other and no store
from the competitin parent company.


Then of course there's the issue of companies like Dell (and Apple used
to do it to) of simply relabelling someone else's product. Car
companies that "join forces" to produce two cars which are basically
identical, but simply have a different badge on them.

As well as companies artifically keeping prices higher than they should
be, either through "secret deals" or simply by an acknowledge mutual
greed to not go lower. (For example, some parallel importers here claim
to have a lower price, but when you look at their prices all they have
really done is taken a few dollars off the regular local reseller price
... it's usually still far cheaper to import one youself from
overseas.)

There may appear to be a wide choice, but the reality is for many
products the choice is actualy very limited, and is simply more of a
marketing scam than any real "competition".
