30 years?! Geez, now I feel even older! :-)

This is from MacRumors.com ...

    Macintosh 30th Anniversary Celebration Event
    Planned for January 25
    --------------------------------------------
The original Macintosh Development Team, along with
the Computer History Museum, is leading a special
event at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California
on January 25 to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary
of the introduction of the Macintosh. The Flint
Center is the since-renovated auditorium where Steve
    Jobs first introduced the Mac.

"In a series of panel discussions, members
of the original team will share memories
about the conception, birth and coming of
age of the Apple Macintosh. Previously
         unreleased video will recreate those
early days. And Ridley Scott will
         participate regarding the iconic '1984'
         commercial conceived by Steve Hayden,
Brent Thomas and Lee Clow. Stage events,
         testimonials and surprise guests will
offer a treasure trove of recollections
         about the era.

In some of the evening¹s highlights, Mike
Markkula will be part of a presentation
acknowledging the unsung heroes of the
computer revolution ‹ the original Mac
team. Currently there are 7 of the 10
         single digit original Apple Employees
confirmed and over 17 double digit badge
         numbers.

The team behind the event, led by Daniel Kottke, is
asking for images and anecdotes from early Macintosh
developers to feature at the show. More details can
be found on the 30th Anniversary Celebration website.

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster starting at
US$109.75 each. All proceeds after expenses will be
    donated to charity. (http://www.mac30th.com)

This will make you feel *really* old. Remember the original Star Wars
movie? Its release date was closer in time to the attack on Pearl Harbor
than to today.

Plus, JJ Abrams likely-garbagised up-coming additions to the franchise
will feel like an attack on Pearl Harbour. :-(

Let's see;
December 7, 1941 to May 25, 1977 = 35 years 5 months 18 days.
May 25, 1977 to January 10, 2014 = 36 years 7 months 15 days.

The reign of Cleopatra is closer to the moon landing than it is to the
building of the Great Pyramid.

My birthdate is closer to the attack on Pearl Harbor than it is to the
release of Star Trek, let alone Star Wars.

The Civil War was in the 1640s. Are you at least 180 years old?

When us folks in North America talk of the Civil War we think in terms
of 1861-65, The Union & The Confederacy, U.S. Grant & R. E. Lee, not
Parliamentarians & Royalists, Cromwell & Charles I.
So for a WWII veteran of say 90-95 years of age, his birthdate could
well be some 30 years closer to the U.S. Civil War than today.

Us folks are not in North America.

Yup!
We are a tad insular when we read "Civil War", thinking only of ours.
That seems to be a trait shared with the English who seem to know of no
other "Civil War", but theirs.

I'm well aware that the Americans managed to have a Civil War rather
after ours, but if I see a post that just refers to "the Civil War" my
default interpretation is going to be that it refers to the English
one. I'm surprised there aren't posts from people in other countries
saying that there's never been a Civil War.

If you wish to do something other than refer to Civil Wars in general,
you'll need to make your reference more specific.

I think we have the Biafran/Nigerian and Angolan Civil Wars covered by
our recent events calendar.

There is nothing civil about war. Just ask anyone who has fought in
any war.

Rather a cliche. But more important, a rather false one. There are
plenty of things about the conduct of many a war that can be described
as civil.

"Civil" in the case of that type of war means within the country.
But one could also have a civil Civil War, if a chess match, for
example, were held between N &S of the US, and were so titled.

Well, i guess you can cherry pick a case. But in the most uncivil of
hot bloody wars there are aspects of it, sometimes strategically
important aspects that are influenced by civility.

It has been argued with some merit that the reason the Western Allies
took so long to get to Berlin after D-Day was that they were not
prepared to be as brutal as the Russians, neither in taking casualties
nor in disposing of and mistreating prisoners.

And many parts of the bloodiest wars have had outright civil contacts
between the parties from time to time.

No, you didn't, I had meant to delete that sentence. I was irritated
and made a mistake.

Your post was more that you thought someone would not know the
bleeding obvious, and you would explain anyway. You replied the way
you did because you just thought you would explain a distinction,
never mind the relevance to the particular subject of my post about
wars (including The Civil War in America) being or not being civil.
