Sports channels and old movie channels and access, via iTunes, to
*some* of the movies on your home network.
So long as you didn't save them as AVI, or in the original VOB format
in VIDEO_TS folders or even as *.ISO copies of the entire disk.
 AppleTv ignores *all* of those.

Netflix offers a free month. It's worth trying just to make sure you
aren't missing much.
Like the BBC, ITV, C4 and C5 on-demand services, you can access
Netflix on your TV through a web browser like Firefox from your
computer, even if it's a Mac.
There are other subscription, and free, TV and film services. Many of
them. AppleTV has a few pre-loaded. What AppleTV does not do is allow
us to load more onto it.
Nor can it accept an external drive attached to its USB port. Nor
does it record in any way.
Apple tell us we don't need that function as everything is online
anyway.

Well, actually, Apple's customers who bought the first version of Apple
TV told that to Apple.

Because they streamed almost everything, and rarely (with some
exceptions of course; there are always exceptions) recorded anything to
its hard drive.

It is a box that can be connected to your home network to stream
video files through iTunes. Only *SOME* video files. AVI are
specifically excluded for some Apple Licencing reason. It can also
download video files (and music) through iTunes from the Internet.
And it has a selection of video file and music supply services built
in which work without iTunes. Netflix is one of these, the others (in
the UK) are all minor film and TV program suppliers who only have
licences for movies no one ever watches or sports TV channels like
ESPN. I *never* watch sports of any kind so those are wasted on me but
I recognise that JR and many others probably love them.
It does *NOT* support video on demand services from the BBC, ITV, C4,
C5 or any other major network nor does it *NATIVELY* link to any of
your networked devices. It *MUST* have iTunes to access anything apart
from the few, poor on-line services.
 AppleTV is a toy.
The original AppleTv did have a HDD and did allow us to record stuff
but Apple got rid of that ability in Mark II.
I am *NOT* whining about it's poor quality, I quite like the box. It
does what it is supposed to and it does it very well. The menu is easy
to use and the remote is cute.
But JR is being rather fanboi and dogmatic and stupid when he insists
that it is the greatest thing since the iPad.
My Blu-Ray player has more functionality and *that* is supposed to be
a *player* not a networked device. It is also less restrictive.
And the BR *does* get BBC On-Demand TV.
Hell, my *MacBook* can see that.

blame bbc tv for not supporting apple tv. they chose not to.

millions disagree.

apple got rid of it because it was an incredibly stupid design and a
feature that few people used. the new design is significantly more
popular.

two totally different products.

No one said that. I think that overall, the Roku 3 is considerably
better. But the Apple TV has some things going for it that the Roku and
others do not.

AVI is a container, and a terrible one at that. AVI containers may
contain an mpeg file (In fact, I think they usually do). I do wish Apple
supported MKV files, but changing container types is pretty damn easy.

My only real problem with the M4V files is that they only support a
single subtitle track,

It does NOT need iTunes at all unless you want to access files you have
only in iTunes. I nearly never do that on my AppleTV since I use it to
access Netflix, HBO, and "Music Match" files. The AppleTV also
subscribes to one of my photo albums via iCloud for the photos to use in
the screensaver. It can also, without iTunes again, access any video
files that were purchased from the iTunes store.

avi is a container, as is mov. what matters is the codec used.

Only as a set-top box, a sort of restrictive "freeview" type device
not as a part of the network which is one of AppleTV's main selling
points. If you want network you need iTunes.
 No iTunes, no network.
Unless there's something I've missed? I would be very happy to be
told I'm wrong in this and to be given a simple setting that I can
toggle so the AppleTV box can network without iTunes.
 Without iTunes and *with* AVI.

So why isn't the software *ON* *THE* *APPLETV* *BOX* *ITSELF*?

My Macbook has onboard software (and other stuff I've added to play
with) and *IT* can see the network but the AppleTV box can *NOT* not
without a second machine running, *ACTIVELY* running iTunes.
My Win-boxes can see the network with only their onboard software.
Fuck, even the bloody TV can do this.
 But not the AppleTV box.
 AppleTv is broken. Crippled. Incomplete.

So why isn't it ON THE APPLETV BOX?
Why does the AppleTV box need a second machine actively running
iTunes before it sees anything?
My PC doesn't. It can network on its own. My Macbook can network on
its own. Fuck, even my TV can do it.
But not the AppleTv box. It *NEEDS* and *MUST* *HAVE* an active
iTunes program running on a second machine before it can see the other
networked devices.
I don't understand why you are so reluctant to see this as a flaw in
the AppleTV box.

>
>> It only sees the *Macbook* if I activate iTunes.
>
>Yep, so?

So why? It's a design flaw and a deliberate one.
I can read the NAS drive from my PC or my Macbook without iTunes. I
can read my NAS drive from my PC without my Macbook and from my
Macbook without my PC but the AppleTV box won't even acknowledge it
exists unless iTunes is running somewhere.
 That is *crippled*.

And I don't understand why you are so reluctant to accept that ApplTv
is a broken product. It is like the iWatch. Incomplete and not very
functional on its own.

Yes, I do know it has Netflix, too, and that *DOES* work without
iTunes.
Buying and downloading other stuff does not.

Obviously because you won't see the AppleTV box as incomplete,
"broken" kit which it is.
It is supposed to be a networked, Internet ready device. I can't load
programs or services onto it when I wish and I can't use it to see
*my* network without iTunes running.
Nor, under any circumstances can I get it to run AVI movie files.
 That is *broken*.
It's a fun toy and I'm not whining about the restrictive nature of it
as I knew what I was buying before I bought it but I don't understand
your complete reluctance to see that as a file distribution device my
1994 Win 3 box does a *far* better job.
Hell, my *stereo* is less restrictive. Also cheaper.

Wrong. You need iTunes *only* if you want to stream media from your
computer. The apps on the Apple TV work without iTunes, and you can
access media in iCloud on your network without iTunes.

Not for Windows computers, nope. And the point is that AppleTV doesn't
need iTunes to exist to function. If you don't want iTunes on your Mac,
you are free to delete it. You're playing silly little games here, and
it's boring.

Wrong. The only thing you need iTunes for is to stream content from a
computer to an AppleTV. You can stream content from iOS devices without
iTunes. You can watch streaming content from the internet through the
AppleTV without iTunes. And so on.

> No iTunes, no network.

Bullshit.

If you can't figure that out on your own, you're hopeless. It's not like
the AppleTV UI is complicated.

> Without iTunes and *with* AVI.

I couldn't care less about playing crappy AVI videos. I bought mine to
play standard H.264 and MPEG content, and it does that very well. I knew
before I bought it what video formats were supported - it's stated in
the specifications for the device, after all:

<https://www.apple.com/appletv/specs/>

If you bought your AppleTV without learning how it is designed and what
it can do, then that's your problem. You don't get to turn around and
complain about it without losing credibility here.

AppleTV doesn't include software to browse network file share volumes
because Apple chose another way to do it.

> My Macbook has onboard software (and other stuff I've added to play
> with) and *IT* can see the network but the AppleTV box can *NOT* not
> without a second machine running, *ACTIVELY* running iTunes.

Bull. It sees the network just fine, evidenced by the fact that you can
stream content from iOS devices and do all sorts of other
internet-related things without iTunes installed on a computer on the
network. It just doesn't support file browsing on shared network volumes
on connected computers. There is a difference between accessing a home
network and browsing file shares, and you want me to ignore it, I
suppose. Not happening.

> My Win-boxes can see the network with only their onboard software.

Your Windows computers can browse file shares on the network. So can
your Macs. The AppleTV isn't a Windows computer or a Mac computer, and
doesn't try to act like one. If you dislike the design, you shouldn't
have purchased it.

> Fuck, even the bloody TV can do this.

Not my television, and certainly not all of them, nope. "Smart"
televisions may do it, but then they do all sorts of things I don't
need.

> But not the AppleTV box. AppleTv is broken. Crippled. Incomplete.

Yet you bought one. You're silly.

Because it isn't a computer and doesn't support browsing file shares on
a network. It uses different methods. It's about the design.

Wrong yet again. AppleTVs can see and stream content from iOS devices
without iTunes installed. They can also stream content from the internet
without iTunes.

> I don't understand why you are so reluctant to see this as a flaw in
> the AppleTV box.

Because it's not a flaw. It's a design choice, and it works just fine
for those who made an informed purchasing decision when they bought it.
Apparently you think that the mere act of running iTunes is a burden for
the rest of us. That's simply not the case. I have had iTunes running on
my media server 24/7 for years now streaming content to my AppleTV and
it never causes a single issue. Where's the flaw?

>>> It only sees the *Macbook* if I activate iTunes.
>>
>>Yep, so?
>
> So why? It's a design flaw and a deliberate one.

Nope, it's a design constraint. If you dislike it, get rid of your
AppleTV. You shouldn't have purchased it to begin with, clearly.

> can read my NAS drive from my PC without my Macbook and from my

Nope. It simply uses a different method to stream content. The fact that
you apparently dislike it doesn't magically make it crippled.

> And I don't understand why you are so reluctant to accept that ApplTv
> is a broken product.

Because it works just fine. You're full of it.

More bullshit. Plenty of folks are finding the Apple Watch extremely
useful, according to the many reviews I am reading at the moment. Do you
even have an Apple Watch? Doubt it. More likely you are just talking out
of your ass. Not surprised.

> Yes, I do know it has Netflix, too, and that *DOES* work without

So do many of its other features, including streaming content from iOS
devices.

It works just fine here. Must be you.

It is both networked and internet ready.

> I can't load programs or services onto it when I wish

If you purchased it with the intent to load programs onto it, you made a
poorly-informed purchasing decision. You don't get to turn around and
act like that's someone else's fault. Get rid of it and buy something
that does what you want, silly.

> and I can't use it to see *my* network without iTunes running.

No, it sees the network just fine. It just doesn't browse file shares on
the network.

> Nor, under any circumstances can I get it to run AVI movie files.
> That is *broken*.

Nope. Supported video formats are clearly stated in the specifications,
and you should have known that before you purchased it. You need to
take personal responsibility for your mistake.

> It's a fun toy and I'm not whining about the restrictive nature of it

Apparently not if you expected it to play AVI.

Because I disagree with your assessment. I find the AppleTV very useful
as a streaming device. And it's not a "file distribution device" as you
like to claim.

Not at all true. That is certainly something it can do, but it does much
more than that.

Who said that?

> If you want network you need iTunes.

OK. But that is a very small slice of what the AppleTV can do.

And it's also not exactly true. I often use Plex on an iOS device to
AirPlay content from my network to the Apple TV. No iTunes involved.

> Unless there's something I've missed?

Many things, yes.

That's not going to happen. Not now, not ever. AVI is a shit container
and nearly no one uses it anymore anyway.

Because that's not how it was designed, obviously. iTunes is already
written and works in Windows or OS X, so there is no reason not to use
it, at least from Apple's point of view.

Yes, you keep repeating that. So fucking what?

The fact that the AppleTV lacks a feature you desire does *not* mean
that lack is a flaw.

It is a deliberate design, that does not make it a flaw.

Ah, you're an idiot. I see.

Yes it does. The AppleTV will play anything that was purchased from the
iTunes store without you having a computer at all.

You are still wrong, regardless of how many times you repeat this.

OH NOES! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD! So fucking what? RUn iTunes. Or load
content from netflix, the iTunes store, HBO, or the other 40 or 50
providers currently on the Apple TV. Or use airplay to send anything
from your iOS devices or Macs to the AppleTV.

Yep. AVI's went out about 10-15 years ago.

Is it easy to install Linux to a laptop? I am thinking if drivers for
touchpad, screen and whatever is special for a laptop could be a
problem.
I have an old Asus Aspire 7720 Vith Vista in the attic. It might be
an idea to instll Linux Zorin on it, and use it for simple things.
The boot time hopefully wil be much shorter than with an old Vista
install.

I installed Arch Linux on an old Dell D630. Very smooth. Integrated
graphics, sound card, wireless, firewire -- oll korrect.

I'd never heard of Zorin - looks interesting. You shouldn't have any
problems .

Arch comes with nothing. You have to know what you want.

I run Linux on all my laptops and have not had many problems. On some
all the function keys do not work without some customization. Most
Intel video chipsets are well supported. For Nvidia and ATI there has
been progress made in the open-source drivers but you may get best
results installing the manufacturer's binary driver. (Ubuntu at least
will offer these if available.) I haven't run into problems with basic
touchpad operation, but multi-touch gestures might not work on some.

Your chances of success are better with an older laptop since it is likely
that hardware support has been in place for a while. Things get dicier if
you're on the bleeding edge.

Easiest thing to do is try something like Linux Mint or Xubuntu (am not
familiar with Zorin) on a CD or flash drive and see how it works with
your hardware.

You don't have to install Linux to try it. Once you have created the
DVD with the Linux iso file you can run it from the DVD.

I recently tried these three Linux distributions - in the order of my
preference - on an old year 2003 HP Pavilion ex-windows xp laptop with
2MB of memeory:

Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca with Cinnamon desktop

It's trivial to install Ubuntu (if you like Unity) or Kubuntu (if you
want the power of KDE) on most laptops that I've installed it on.

Long ago, we had to mess with drivers but no longer (except Nvidia, but
that's a pain on Windows also).

I've installed maybe a half dozen only, but each one was a breeze.

I find the software selection phenomenal.
There must be thousands upon thousands of apps freely available.

You'd be very hard pressed to find an app that you have to pay for,
since almost everything you need to do already has a app to do that.

What do you need to do on the laptop?

In 2007, maybe not. Today it's a doddle. You can even run *Nixxy OSes
from CD or USB-stick without ever loading them onto your machine. This
allows you to test them first.
Look for a live CD version and try it.
