#20924 — Strange mail.app problem

The Trash mailbox icon shows one unread message, but when I look at the
list of messages in the trash folder/mailbox, none of the messages are
marked as being unread.

Rebuilding the mailbox doesn't help. I checked the account on line,
and all the messages in the trash mailbox/folder are only on the
computer and not on the IMAP server.

Anyone have an idea of what is going on?

No idea. My Mail is acting Bolshy, too.

For the "unread" message, Select All, Cmd-Shift-U (marks all read or unread)

Thanks. I used the contextual menu to mark all as read. That seems to
have solved the problem.

Mail.app has been downright weird since the Mavericks upgrade for me.

The download bar shows many more messages being downloaded than actually arrive.

Sometimes it wont let me move messages from one folder to another.

A few other minor things that escape me at the moment.

Needs some work.

I've been using it all along since 10.0.1, but there are things about
Mail that are hinky. It doesn't quite thread correctly, there are weird
things that happen resulting in a thread having the wrong subject line,
and it has never quite conformed with Unix keyboard standards for going
through messages. But it's still better IMHO than any of the
alternative mail applications... which says something about the state of
e-mail on Mac OS.

Right. I didn't say it was without issue. All software has issues. Even
with its issues, however, I've never considered it to be completely
unusable as indicated above.

Nope. Nothing out of the ordinary. I'm just pointing out that Mail works
for lots people using it. It does have its flaws (as all software does),
but most people simply are not drastically inconvenienced by it.

I've been using it for years as well.

Mavericks "upgrade" for Mail seems to have more issues ranging
in severity from merely annoying to making it unusable for some
than previous versions.

I've read rumors, taken with the usual grain of salt, that fixing
the various new Mail.app problems is absorbing so much programming
bandwidth that more serious issues ( to me ) like the problems
with audio devices on the new Haswell machines are being back-burnered...

There's the inconvienience for me...

I'm sure it'll all get sorted out, hopefully during my life...

I haven't tried it yet, and am not likely to as I've since found
that MailMate is a truly excellent user agent (only the second
program that's good enough to get a free ad on my web site), but
I see in the 10.9.2 release notes that it -

So -- those of you having trouble with Apple Mail might want to
give this a shot.

My impression is that they re-wrote at least part of Mail.app, trying to
make the user interface appear unchanged.

One change I noticed immediately, was that reading a copy of a message
saved in a mailbox, causes it to be marked as read anywhere else a copy
exists. My opinion is that when you put a copy of a message into
another location, it is now a different document, not merely an alias.

The reverse is not the case, since marking a message as unread does not
change its state in other locations.

Other weird events may be due to my ISP, it is hard to tell. For
example, a day after a message was sent, a copy will sometimes appear in
the Draft folder.

I can delete a message, change folders, change back to the previous
folder, and find the deleted message still there. It is necessary to
wait for all transactions with the mail server to be completed before
changing folders, for the deletion to "take".

Fred

They certainly significantly reworked the way they handle Gmail IMAP
accounts, so they no longer have to download multiple copies of any
email that has multiple labels. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that
caused knock-on effects/bugs like the one you described.
