#20596 — docx files on a Mac

FromErilar <drache@chibardun.netinvalid>

Subjectdocx files on a Mac
Message-ID<lbm5ar$b71$2@dont-email.me>
How do you open one of these on a Mac without destroying the formatting? I
can open it with Open Office, Bean, and if I remember correctly, even
Pages, but the format is destroyed.

The original is a paper with endnotes I'm supposed to submit as Word. I can
save as Word, though I have to mail it as a .pdf, but they want me to make
a couple corrections in the docx they sent me and the side note stuff ends
up in places where it haa no discernible connection to the text. Cryptic
notes don't help.

Even if I could make sense of it and make the corrections, the endnotes
would still be turned into page notes, which is the wrong format.

Buy Word for the Mac; I think you would have to buy the home/student
edition of Office for the Mac; it retails for $140, but you can get it
for less; Amazon sells it for $114. Best Buy's price is $120.

Download the demo version of the latest 'NisusWriter Pro'. - It is
full-working for 15 days. - NWP may solve the problems, but it /may/
also give some font problems if the original .docx file is written in
Word 2012 for Windows - especially if the fonts used in the orig.
document are 'MS Serif' and/or 'MS San Serif'. - But since the demo is
free for two weeks, it could be worth trying.

The older MS Office 2008 will run on all Mac OS X up through Mavericks,
and you can likely find a pretty reasonably priced new copy on ebay for
$40-50. (Or one that has unused serial numbers with it)

For PC compatibility you need it. Period.
If you plan to write more, recommend just bite the bullet and buy a
copy.

New discovery, I think. Reading iPad Air info: it said something about
opening docx files. . .

You use the program it was created with: Microsoft Word.

Other programs are pretty good at preserving formatting, but there
are always going to be some edge cases that don't work. Then you
need to use the original program.

You could try asking the person who sent you the file to resend it as
a .doc file, but no guarantees that would work in this case either.

Give them your corrections in a secondary file:

Replacement text for 3rd/4th paragraphs, ...
Change all occurences of X to Y...
Update the residents of building X to read ...

Etc.

Oops. I meant to add that you can give them the entire text of the
thing, and have them paste it in, retaining the foot notes and whatever
the hell formatting they like.

Thanks for the suggestions, but so far I'm being told that doesn't work. I
DID send the 3 minor corrections I COULD find, even though I can't make
head nor tail of one they sent, but that's apparently not good enough. It
was a LOT of work for something I was told was going to be published that
now apparently isn't. Never again. I'm going back to researching just for
fun.

If 'they' are paying you for the service, buy MS Word and include that
in your charges. If 'they' are not paying you, tell them to do a 'save
as' .doc file before sending it to you.

Actually the the Formatting, Paragraph/line end (Linefeeds) Tabs, and so
on are usually preserved in application like OpenOffice (and its
variants), Mellel, Nisus Writer Pro.

Usually though they save in their proprietary format. Though the Open
Office (variants), Mellel, Nisus can export to word format.

What's destroyed is any VBA, or Macros Text Editors such as BBEdit,
BBEdit Lite, TextWrangler, Do destroy any formatting except Indents and
Line feed/Paragraph end

OO also moves footnotes from end to page bottom, which misplaces requested
edits in the side bar. This also raises the question of what happens to
text and footnotes if I try to send it back. I think I'd have to make
changes in the original Pages document so I could Save As Word in a .pdf to
send it back. And they aren't happy with .pdf to begin with.

If any other Mac user is ever urged to turn an oral presentation to a
scholarly audience into an academic paper for publication, find out in
advance whether you'll be allowed to submit it in a form you can access!

A couple of us suggested asking your colleague/client/whoever to
save the file as .doc and resend it to you. Have you tried that?

Oh, that was the process in earlier stages, but then the suggested changes
were in accompanying e-mail. They changed the process after 99% of the
work had been done

I'm not sure what you mean. It doesn't matter if they have made
changes that were suggested in email rather than included in the
Word document. The bottom line is that they have a .docx file and
they could still save it as a .doc file and send it to you. Are
they willing to do that or not?

Alternatively, do you not know anyone who has a recent version of
MS Word who could convert the file for you?

Unless the .docx file has elements that aren't supported in earlier
versions of Word (and from what you've said so far, it doesn't),
then you should be fine editing it in your older version and sending
it back to the publishers as a .doc file.

Zamzar's website can do lots of types of file conversions, including .docx
to .doc

Would that be any use?

The URL is: <http://www.zamzar.com/>
