#20428 — Preview keeps hanging

While working with a bunch of Acobat files, I had a freeze, and had to
force reboot. Now, whenever I attempt to open any PDF or image file, as
soon as Preview opens, it throws up an error message stating that I
don't have sufficient permissions to open the document. At that point, I
can't close the error message window (the SBBOD appears as soon as I
move the cursor over the error message window), and I need to force-quit
Preview.

Get Info suggests that the privileges of the files are what they should
be, and DU's permissions repairs didn't find anything unusual (except
some of the usual false-alarm errors). The only one that may be related
was:

Warning: SUID
file"System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/
MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Suggestions?

Are you doubling-clicking on a PDF file to start Preview?

What happens when you start Preview without supplying a file?

If the permissions on the PDF file look OK, then maybe it is the
Preview preferences file that is the problem. Move the Preview
permissions file somewhere and open Preview again.

Are you comfortable with the Terminal and Unix commands? (do 'ls -l
pdf-file' to see what the file permissions are).

That message has nothing to do with a Preview or PDFs. If that
particular warning comes up especially with Mountain Lion (OSX.8.x) and
Mavericks Mavericks (OSX.9.x) That can be safely ignored. Each time they
update the Disk Utilities they end up messing something up so at least
one or two things give out false messages.

If do the same thing going to Recovery disk You'll see the same message.

I would suggest downloading Adobe Reader (Free) to view PDF's And see
if the files are corrupt. Preview has a terrible habit of corrupting PDF
and absolutely destroys Forms. Just the act of opening a PDF form and
closing it will absolute damage a form.

Try going to Recovery Disk (Restart with ⌘-R) Try repairing The Drive
and the Repair permissions. Don't bother verifying. When you choose
repair, if doesn't fix anything its verifying anyway.

If it fixes the Hard Drive run it again. If the second time around it
says its okay you good to go. Do the Drive repair first before the
permissions.

Have you checked the permissions on the folder heirarchy above where the
problem files are stored?

OK, here's an "update" (of sorts): After a day of this nonsense, the
problem appeared to "go away." I did nothing to make that happen; all I
did was repeatedly attempt to open the docs both directly (double
clicking) or from within Preview. But then finally, after several
successive reboots, when attempting to open one of the PDF documents
that had been problematic, a slew of "recently opened" PDF documents
opened all at once. I've had no difficulties since then. However, *that*
problem was (coincidentally?) immediately replaced by an entirely new
problem: I suddenly was unable to scan any documents (either from my
4-year old HP inkjet, or my 4-month old Brother laser). Although I could
initiate a scan via either Print & Scan or Image Capture, in both cases
the Scan button was not functional (greyed out) -- only the Overview
button was functional. But that problem, too, eventually "went away."

FWIW: I have for some time been experiencing other, intermittent
problems with Preview, as well as with Finder:

Preview: Attempts to search within documents that open in Preview
frequently fail -- i.e., searching either doesn't occur, or, if it
succeeds and items are found, clicking on the arrows next to the Find
field to advance to the found highlighted items fails, accompanied by an
alert (Basso) sound.

Finder: Attempts to open a document's parent folder by right-clicking
its proxy icon and selecting the parent folder frequently fails -- but
selecting the "grandparent" folder (or other folders higher in the path
hierarchy) works fine.

I have no clue whether these problems are at all related. I mention them
only in the off chance that they're symptoms of an underlying systemic
problem that's obvious to one of you.

In the lower right corner of the Get Info window, look for the small
padlock icon. If it's locked, click on it to unlock, then try opening
the file again.
