I wish I could persuade VirtualBox to stop telling me every ten seconds
that I have turned on this setting or that.

I wish I could persuade VirtualBox to stop telling me every ten seconds
that the bit depth on the monitor is zero.

I wish I could persuade VirtualBox to stop reversing my window size

Thanks. I probably would have gone looking for that,
since I found nothing on Usenet.

You can... Switch to VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop.:-)

Had the fusion free trial. It has its own quirks. At least it was more
stable than the VMWare workstation I had to use on the job.

Might try Parallels if they have a trial offer. But I never run Windows
at home anyway--I installed it on someone else's new Mac
to ease their transition.

There is a trial here:
<http://www.parallels.com/downloads/desktop/>

I use Parallels Desktop on my MacPro and it's working great. Especially
one feature suites me very well. PD+Win will recognize *ANY* external
Firewire and/or USB disk as 'shared disks' which means that such disks
are recognized as network disks and you normally don't need to add them
to the Parallels disk manager. - But if they don't show up, it's just to
add the disks in the manager with their name, and afterwards it's easy
to enable/disable as you like to.

Also this kind of handling the external Mac disks do allow you to both
READ and WRITE to/from these disks without having to think of any
differences in the disk structure. - And when/if you're using MSWord
2010 Windows, StarOffice Windows, OpenOffice Windows or even WinNotepad
you can just make a 'save as' directly to a Mac formatted disk and read
the file from such a Mac formatted disk again if needed!

I use MSO2008 Mac, MSO2003 on my Windows, OpenOffice 4 on both Windows
and Mac as well as AppleWoirks 6.2.x [Yes, I have AWKS Win 6.2] on both
Windows and Mac. I've setup each pair as identically as possible, so any
flows are minimized when using files on each paltform

And hereto... An antivirus app is a must-have on Windows and if you
chose Avast! Home Free it will automatically include ANY 'shared disks'
and bootabnle Mac disks and protect the whole network against vira.

Cheers, Erik Richard

VMware workstation on which host? I found that Fusion has far fewer
features than the trail copy of Workstation I tried a couple of years
ago on Linux and Windows (though the muh lower price of Fusion certainly
reflects that).

Parallels' aggressive marketing drove me away from the product.

Being prompted to buy straight away every time I fired up a VM swiftly
got irritating, especially when my mailbox was getting stuffed with cut
price offers at the same time. While they do promptly honour
cancellations of that email it did get tiresome. If you do go for a
trial, give them a throwaway address and if you find that 2 weeks for
the trial isn't enough, you'll need another email address anyway for
another trial.

One thing I found about Parallels is that it puts stuff all over the
place; even after deleting it from the system I still kept finding
references to it. It also wanted to fire stuff up in Windows all the
time: e.g. given LibreOffice on both OS X and in Windows, it would pick
the Windows version by default.

I did find a web site which details everything you need to do to
eradicate it from your system (and reset a trial copy):

VMWare workstation 6.x.3, which was the latest available at the last
time I used it. Each member of the web team had a VM nearly identical
to the public Windows Server with IIS. (No flames about Apache--I only
worked there.) More than once a month, I had to rebuild the whole VM,
not because of your typical Microsoft idiocies, but because VMWare kept
messing up its vdk structure.

> Parallels' aggressive marketing drove me away from the product.

Your description of that marketing persuaded me to not do business with
them.

Click on either message and it expands for more info--including a "don't
tell me again" checkbox. Which I was sure I had already checked, but ...

It sets Window size to the VM screen size. And it defaults the VM
screen to 600x800. On top of that, it tries to scale those pixels
to be much smaller than the Mac's actual resolution.

But it's finally running. No network connection yet, but whatever.

Sorry, I could have told you that if I'd got to your post sooner.

I've used VirtualBox a lot, although mainly on Windows then Linux hosts,
and clicking on "Don't tell me again" becomes second nature with
practice.

The VirtualBox management GUI isn't as good on OS X as on Linux or
Windows, but it is far far better than when they first made the OS X
version available; I was seriously considering learning how to do it
all from the command line in earlier versions.

FWIW I've had similar problems with VMware Fusion.

Have you installed the Guest Additions on the client? This is the first
job you need to do after an installation as it gives you networking,
copy and paste between client and host (for some strange reason copy and
paste are disabled by default in the settings for the OS X version), and
screen resizing.

> But it's finally running. No network connection yet, but whatever.

I initially found that Networking -> Bridged Adaptor was the way to go
for my needs, but Mavericks broke that. I have been using NAT without
problems since that upgrade.

I forgot to say how to install Guest Additions.

While running the VM you want to add Guest Additions to, you select the
menu item Devices (this isn't in the menu if no VMs are running) and
then Install Guest Additions. You may need to wait a while, but a CD
containing the GA software will appear and you can navigate to it.

For Windows Guests, pick the 32 or 64 bit .exe, double click on it to
execute and follow the dialogue.

Aarrgghh. If you hadn't said that, I would still be cursing under my
breath trying to get networking to function so I could activate the
idiotic Windows that says the key on the C.O.A. is not a valid key.

So I have to do the guest additions _first_. :-(

Yes, and then resizing the window resizes the virtual display. I've not
had any problems with VirtualBox (running one XP and one Win7) so I'm
somewhat bemused by this thread.

Maybe you've been running long enough to have forgotten the start-up
problems. Or maybe someone warned you about them in advance so that you
didn't have them.

HERE is the first place I ever read that you can't activate Windows
before installing the guest additions. In VMWare, the guest additions
were installed by a script that the guest O.S. would run (after VMWare
made the location available to the guest).

So I thought I had to get Windows going first.

Also in VMWare, the display and mouse worked properly with or without
the guest additions.

But, hey, I shouldn't be too picky about a free product. :-)

If it happens often enough to "become second nature," does that mean it
IS showing you again, or that there are zillions of those messages?

I've only seen three. And I saw them and dismissed them dozens of times
before I accidentally missed the close box and clicked on the message.
Which made the box open up enough to see that it HAD a never again checkbox,
