#28689 — Transfer of iTunes movie rental

This week I downloaded an iTunes movie rental on my MacBook Pro and
wanted to transfer it for viewing to my iPad retina. I just couldn't do
it dcspite the seemingly simple instructions. I hooked the iPad to the
Max with a USB cable, clicked on it in iTunes, clicked movies, and
clicked the move arrow from the Mac to the iPad. The movie icon then
appeared in the iPad box but it never made it to the iPad proper. The
Mac was on line and so was the iPad. There was enough room in the iPad
memory to take the film.

Does the film file get transferred over the USB cable and then erased on
the Mac.

Anyway, I couldn't get it to work and wound up having to watch it on my
laptop.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Good so far...

What "move arrow"? There is a "Sync Movies" button at the very top, and
below that are some checkbox settings that let you specify which movies
you want to sync. Whatever you specify there gets synchronized with the
iPad the next time you start a sync. At the bottom-right corner of the
window is a "Sync" button that starts synchronizing your iPad with the
computer. If you don't start a sync, no sync happens (unless you have
iTunes configured to start them automatically the next time you connect
the USB cable to the computer).

Did you actually synchronize the iPad with the computer? If not, that's
why.

It will only be erased if you delete it from the iTunes library on the
Mac.

It's pretty simple. Connect the iPad, specify which movies you want to
sync, then start a sync. The movie should then appear on the iPad.

In theory, yes. I have had an issue where a movie on my computer simply
would not sync to an iPad even after several days. And then other times
it would sync right over.

Movies are the only thing I've ever had any trouble syncing though, and
even those not very often. Often enough though.

Well, it is not an issue for me at the moment. I wound up viewing the
film on my Mac which was a lot less comfortable than the iPad.

I tried to follow the instructions saved from an Apple help site as
indicated by my original post. I saved it as a grab jpg but you can't
post images here. Anyway, another Apple site indicates that this only
works for films BOUGHT from the iTunes store. Anyway, next time I will
try to procede with a simple USB sync from the summary tab.

You can post a screenshot link using a service like TinyPic (or any
other free image hosting service):

1. On your keyboard, press Command-Shift-4.
2. On your keyboard, press the space bar.
3. Click the window you want. A picture file will appear on the desktop.
4. Go to <http://tinypic.com> and follow the instructions to upload the
picture.
7. Paste the "Direct link" URL in a newsgroup message.

Without knowing more...

I spent a few minutes of my time asking you what I figured were
relatively simple questions that should have been easy to answer, and
you apparently declined. I guess I'll think twice next time.

Ok.

There's really not much point in posting here about it if you aren't
willing to answer any questions, though.

Is something preventing you from posting the URL to said Apple help
site?

That occurred to me when I first read this thread. You download
purchased movies, but you stream rentals, so with a rental there is
nothing to transfer. You can switch devices--computer, iPad, Apple
TV--in the midst of watching and pick up where you left off on the
former device. My wife watches rentals on the house TV via Apple TV,
the most convenient way, I think.

At least at one time you couldn't see rentals on anything but the
device you rented it on. I haven't checked recently to see if that has
changed as I do like your wife does, rent on the AppleTV and watch on
the big screen.
