What does it do that you want it to do? > > Writing stuff with no frills 8-) I think the question JR meant to (or should have) asked is "What DOESN'T it do that you want it to do?" In other words, what exactly are you looking for, and how have the programs you have tried not worked to your satisfaction? I gather you want to produce a multi-page document with mixed graphics and text. You can do that with TextEdit, Preview, Adobe Acrobat, Pages, Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Quark Express, Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator, etc., etc., and, apparently, ColorIt (I have not used ColorIt so I don't know its capabilities.) Here are some questions you might want to answer: 1. How many pages in a document? 2. How many graphic images do you want to put on each page. 3. How big are the graphic images? 4. How much text do you want to put on a page? 5. Is the text associated with an image, like a caption? 6. Do you want the text to be next to (above, below, beside) the graphic or on top of the image? I use Adobe InDesign for this kind of task, but it is expensive and probably overkill for your needs. As a Layout program, it gives you complete control over what is placed and where on each page. Word Processing programs, such as Word and Pages, want to flow the content from top to bottom and add pages as needed as content fills each page. However, by using "text boxes" you may be able to position text at arbitrary locations on a page. If you have Pages, and you don't want to purchase and learn a complicated layout program such as InDesign, then Pages may be your best choice. Then, it is a matter of seeing if Pages can be forced into doing what you want to do. I have not used Pages a lot, but I am sure there are people here who can help you, provided they know exactly what it is you are trying to do. -- Jim Gibson

As I posted the other day, and you evidently missed, with Pages you choose whether the document you are about to start creating is a page layout document or a word processing document. I've used both modes and for word processing is is more predictable than Word. I've also laid out leaflets and brochures with it in page layout mode. PageMaker was easier to use in this regard, but it's certainly do-able without excessive problems. I've stuck to version 4.3 (Pages '09) rather than moving to version 5, as for reasons I'm not quite clear on they've rewritten V5 from the ground up, and one feature that's missing at the moment is linked text boxes. -- Anyone who slaps a 'this page is best viewed with Browser X' label on a Web page appears to be yearning for the bad old days, before the Web, when you had very little chance of reading a document written on another computer, another word processor, or another network. -- Tim Berners-Lee

Paged V5 was rewritten so that it could be used on OS X, iOS, and the web and be completely compatible between all three. For me, this has been well worth the (temporary?) loss of some features, but my needs for Word Processing are very light as almost everything I do is plain text (BBEdit or Vim, mostly). In fact, I have been known to use a text editor to create a webpage and print that as a replacement for a word processor. Not that I am recommending that anyone, ever, do that. But when I needed a well-formatted letter or a form and didn't have a WP handy, HTML did the job well enough. (And yes, for the form I cheated and put everything inside a table so it would all line up where I wanted.) -- If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

What do you mean by "wrecks the formatting"? When you insert an image, you have of course to decide how you want the text to flow round the image. Or not to flow. Are you doing that? >Sometimes I want to start with multiple images and add text to fit. ClarisWorks was the last program that let ME configure and keep my templates, macros, and much more, move back and forth between WP, Draw, and Paint (as well as others), all without having to fire up separate programs. Also without cluttering each up with fixed formats I have no use for. Pages doesn't even keep the templates I make properly. And the new one on the new laptop is even worse! Have you considered LaTeX? Bit of a learning curve, but it gives you all the control you could possibly want. Plus, (being text-only for content entry), it works with whatever text editor you prefer.
