Time Capsule, printer/scanner connections are wifi, which is why they're easily accessible from both laptops. Speakers and power supply are the only "permanant" wired connections to the new laptop. Old Faithful G4, which accesses the past almost two decades of stuff, is connected to the Airport Extreme via Ethernet. That is connected to the ISP, along with the TV, via whatever it is somewhere in the spaghetti under the desk. I have a varied collection of cables, some of which I don't know the function of, but none has the same connector on both ends. (Part of the collection is for connecting things related to the TV, and others for other gadgets, but I know what they're for). -- biblioholic medievalist

Tim was telling you to drag things from disks on your computer around. You can mount the disk from one computer onto another and I think some standard advice about this has been described at other times. But, your question may have a different answer, there may be an undocumented key combination that can drag a file from a computer that is neither physically nor wirelessly connected to another whilst also holding down the mouse key as you drag. You might have to bury some red hair at the nearest cross roads for this to work. -- dorayme

Open the > Applications folder of your new machine. Then drag the old app across > with the mouse - y'know, same as you would for moving any file. That will not work. (I just tried - Pages 4.3 crashed on launch after being copied to a fresh 10.10 system by drag and drop, complaining that it wasn't installed properly.) Erilar's old computer dates back to Snow Leopard and therefore will have iWork '09 originally installed from CD. That variant of iWork is not self contained within the application files. There are also several files installed in /Library. Many of those files are necessary for the iWork '09 applications to work at all. To get the CD variant of iWork '09 onto another Mac, it should be installed from the original CD. Erilar bought the mid 2012 MacBook Pro with optical drive, so no problem actually accessing the CD, but there will be one problem to work around: The iWork '09 installer is old enough that it isn't recognised by the Gatekeeper sercurity mechanism used by Mountain Lion and later. When attempting to open the installer package, you will get a message saying something like "iWork 09 can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" with an OK button but no obvious way to allow it to install. To work around this: first click the OK button to get rid of that message. Then hold down the Control key and click on the icon for the iWork '09 installer package, then choose the Open command from the contextual menu. You then get a message asking for confirmation and you can choose Open. After you have iWork '09 installed, you will also need to install the iWork 9.3 update, which can be downloaded here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1563 (iWork '09 had several updates, some of which were required for compatibility with Lion or Mountain Lion. The 9.3 update was the last one before the major rewrite which completely changed the iWork applications.) -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

That should also work, but wasn't an option in Erilar's case (as she already set up the new computer) so I didn't mention it. I've successfully migrated the iWork '09 applications to new computers twice since I first installed them, and upgraded to every intervening OS X version in the process. I went from Mavericks to Yosemite via an upgrade on the same computer, but I got to Mavericks via a migration to a new computer. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Right, but - silly question - what is Migration Assistant doing over and above a simple copy of the .app such that Pages etc then run under Yosemite rather than *not* running (because I did a simple drag/drop copy). If you see what I mean. Migration/Setup Assistant also copies files in /Library which it knows are not part of the base system, thereby getting all the extra files required by iWork '09. Trying to do this manually is difficult, if you don't know what was installed where or how to look for the details. If you have the installer it is much easier to just install it again on the other computer, then update it. Especially because an attempt to copy a Snow Leopard version of iWork '09 to a Mountain Lion or later system will be getting an outdated version. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Pages 4.3 definitely works on Yosemite, but Pages has never been a "drag and drop" install.
