I'm just thinking if Mail is *designed* to use APOP whenever the POP
server indicates that it is supported, the bug report will simply be
marked as "working as designed". It's worth a shot either way, though.

But since the authentication menu still contains APOP as a separate
option, as Michelle confirmed it does, they shouldn't override the
user's choice.

It's fine to have an option where the application figures it out
automatically, like they do for the outgoing port number. But they
shouldn't treat the Password option as "APOP or Password".

The options are
External (TLS client Certificate)
Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)
NTLM
MD5 Challenge-Response
Authenticated POP (APOP)
Password

It doesn't seem like the problem is on your end. If APOP authentication
is failing on the server, the it's likely something your email service
provider will need to fix (assuming you are indeed using the proper
configuration settings for that server, and the correct credentials). At
this point, I think I would contact the email service provider for
assistance. They can examine the server to see what's going on there
when you connect.

Yeah, maybe.

Good catch. So that's probably what's going on. It could be the server
is simply improperly configured in some way so that APOP sessions fail.
An email to the email provider may be in order here.

I took an easier way out; I'm switching from godaddy to hostmonster.
This will dump that POP3 server in favor of an IMAP server and
consolidate both of my domains with the same registrar and hosting
service. It's something that I've been thinking of doing for quite a
while anyway, and this problem got me off my inertia.

Hostmonster is charging me only for a one-year extension of the
registration ($11.99).

That'll do! I doubt you would get very effective help from GoDaddy
anyway. They are pretty much bottom of the barrel. : D

When I started with them, they were strictly local for the Arizona area.

Oh, wow. Is that where they started out? How long ago was that?

It started as Jomax Technologies in 1997, and changed its name to
GoDaddy in 1999. I became aa customer in 2001 or 2002. They became
nationwide as a result of their first Superbowl ad.

Yes, but the SERVER says it was wrong, so... nothing you can do about
it. Copy and paste the password from cleartext into to different
connection types, Mail.app and something that works. Then file a bug
report detailing what you did (and the real name of the server you are
connecting to).

You are using Authenticated POP, which some server configurations do not
support. You might try changing Mail Preferences > Accounts > (Your
Account) > Advanced > Authentication to "Password" rather than APOP.

Your email service provider should tell you which settings you should be
using.

It is set, and always has been set, to "Password".

Not according to the log you listed.

Must I provide a screen shot to prove that I am able to read what the

That may very well be, but the point is according to the log, Mail is
using APOP. Have you tried deleting and re-creating this account in Mail
Preferences?

It might be nice to know what would happen if you create a brand-new Mac
OS X user account, log into it, and configure Mail in that account.

Then perhaps there's a bug in mail, and I should report it to Apple.

I haven't tried those yet; I was hoping that someone here might know a
solution that didn't require doing that.

Here's a log from another POP account, with a different ISP; the
Authentication popup menu says "Password".

Could be, yep. If this wasn't a beta, I'd say giving them a call to let
them troubleshoot the problem might be worth your time.

That's what I would expect to see when "Password" is chosen for
Authentication rather than "APOP". Something tells me re-creating the
account might fix your issue.

I take it you are using Apple's Mail client? Have you checked the
Activity and Connection Doctor windows to see what the email server
returns when you attempt to connect?
