Right. It's much more than the lame TextEdit of word processors. It's
quite full-featured for a command-line editor. Being ubiquitous likely
helps there too, since more people use it, and naturally more extensions
and so on are added to it as a result.

For what very little text editing I do, the stock text edit under OS X
(or Windows notepad for that matter) is more than adequate. I don't
recall why, but when editing that particular file a couple years ago I
was forced to use vi which meant finding a bare bones tutorial/command
list on the web. Thankfully I had a laptop handy to use as a web manual.

OK, here is my cookbook for that.

Download and install tin:

cd

curl ftp://ftp.tin.org/pub/news/clients/tin/stable/tin-current.tar.gz -o
tin-current.tar.gz

tar -xf tin-current.tar.gz

cd tin-2.2.0/

./configure

make build

sudo make install

(You can now use tin via a long command):

tin -g your.newsserver

But you want to set the newsserver and maybe change the default text
editor from vi to pico:

cd
pico .profile
NNTPSERVER="your.newsserver"; export NNTPSERVER
VISUAL=pico; export VISUAL
EDITOR=pico; export EDITOR
(log out and log back in or reboot so the changes apply)

Then launch tin by

tin -r

or just:

rtin

subscribe to newsgroups via
g
comp.sys.mac.comm
s

...want to use several newsservers?

pico ~/.tin/newsrctable
your.newsserver1 .newsrc.your.newsserver1 news1
your.newsserver2 .newsrc.your.newsserver2 news2

Then choose the desired newssserver:

tin -g news1
tin -g news2

Install MacPorts

port install slrn +uudeview +ssl

win.

No need for that nonsense. As I said, it's a straight compile and
install.

MacPorts is a really bloated way of getting slrn into your system. Gawd.
You still need the developer tools -- why not use them?

How do you figure that? I don't see that slrn is at all bloated.

I do, but package managers exist for a reason (convenience) and I have
quiet a lot of packages installed.

I wasn't suggesting that slrn was bloated, I was suggesting that
MacPorts is bloated. I don't do it that way -- if it works for you,
that's fine.

The entire /opt tree uses 0.076669% of my drive space. And that's on my
LAPTOP.

Whereas slrn by itself would certainly use even less. Same goes for any
other packages you have installed. I think that's the only point he was
making, which is true. He also said the equivalent of "to each, his
own". One wonders why we're still having this conversation...

I had no luck trying to get slrn to deal with any applications outside
of Terminal, but that may just be due to not knowing how to properly
write the configs. The learning curve for setting up the app is
slightly steep and the documentation leaves a bit to be desired.

I used MacPorts to install it, IIRC.

It's rather simple. As shown here, you just use the editor_command
setting in your ~/.slrnrc file:

<http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/slrn-manual-6.html#ss6.20>

Like so:

set editor_command "editorcommandhere"

For instance, here's mine, which set automatic hard line wrapping at 72
characters and enables the vim colorized spell checker:

set editor_command "vim --cmd 'set textwidth=72' --cmd 'set spell' --cmd
'hi clear SpellBad' --cmd 'hi SpellBad cterm=underline ctermfg=red' +%d
'%s'"

Substitute your preferred command-line editor.

Yeah, my editor_command entry is simpler, just calling nano, but I meant
that I could not get slrn to use TextWrangler as the editor or Chromium
as the browser. Perhaps that is because I installed using MacPorts and
it can't find its way out of the /opt filesystem to applications in
/Applications?

1. It needs to be a command-line editor.
2. If the editor in question is not on your $PATH, you'll need to
specify the full path in the editor_command setting.

The stand-alone (read: not App Store) version of TextWrangler comes with
a command-line editor that gets installed at /usr/local/bin/edit. If you
call 'edit' from the command line, it opens TextWrangler's GUI editor.

But that's trivial. TW includes a "command line tool" named, as I
recall, 'edit'

set editor_command "edit -w --resume +%d '%s'"

> or Chromium as the browser.

Dunno about that, but

set non_Xbrowser "open '%s'"
set Xbrowser "open '%s'"

Works perfectly well for me and always uses my default browser.

Mine is just:

set post_editor_command "vim -c 'set filetype=mail' +8 %s"

But I normally have spell checking on in vim.

> Substitute your preferred command-line editor.

I looked at jed, which is very nice. Sadly, it's not vim and I'm just too
entrenched to use anything else in the terminal.

On this laptop, vim is an alias for bbedit, so I need to adjust some things.

I've replaced MTNW with slrn on Mac OS X 10.9.x and am loving it! : )

That's a silly level of trouble to go to for MTNW.
