MSWord would be best. LibreOffice is pretty good at keeping stuff
consistent.
There are MessyOffice suites for Mac. If you only need them for a
while, download a trial copy but DOWNLOAD IT FROM MICROSOFT.COM never
from ebay or anywhere else. Trial copies generally work *once* per box
for about sixty days then they expire and stop working properly. Even
after that they might work *enough* for what you need. They don't curl
up and die, they just lose functions.
Microsoft are quite happy for you to continue to use crippled
MessyOffice copies as they suspect most who do will eventually get
tired of exceedingly polite "this function has expired please buy a
fucking licence, you cheapskate" messages. I know I did.
Another route, and I know I'm plugging this a lot, tonight, is to
download CrossOver or some other WINE and "borrow" a fully licensed
copy of MessyWord from a PC user. Fully licensed copies generally
allow you to run them on three PC's or so.
Again, doing that, you need to download a trial copy then use your
pal's product key to activate it.

That's an interesting suggestion. My daughter has it MS, but she also has more than one computer already. . . I'm back in limbo again at the moment, so I'm waiting to hear more. It's a major bummer, because I was told almost a year ago that it was going to be published, and even that the special orthography in one appendix could be done. I even turned in a permission to publish form of some kind. Then I heard nothing for almost a year. OK, publishing stuff can be slow, but really! Recently I wrote and asked what was up and was tol it had been left out of the collection because of that appendix and new problems. The problem appendix isn't vital; it's scholarly show off more than essential to the argument. I'd never have written this version wothout urging and editing along the way from the person who NOW tells me there are previously-unmentioned hangups -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad
