#20686 — iTunes 11 8-(

I "up"graded iTunes because I'm probably going to buy an iPad Air soon.
It's a mucky mess.
The master music list has vanished, as far as I can see. Is there a way
to get it back?
It took several tries to find where my playlists were hidden.
It won't let me see album covers at the bottom of the playlists any
more, just uses up a 3-inch column so most of my info is hidden off to
the right and I have to scroll to find it.
It wanted to make my book/pdf lists impossible to read with monsterview,
but I finally managed to defeat that, too.

My distrust of "up"grades has been vindicated yet again.

Google is your friend. I discovered that unless you have a backup of
your entire system, you can't back out of updating iTunes. When v11
came out, it had some really bad podcast bugs which I had to back out by
hand from my backup. TimeMachine was NO help--I needed a disk archive
and a utility to unpack the iTunes Installation package and replace all
the old components by hand from the command-line.

My guess is that's not an option for you. And if you didn't take a full
clone dump of your disk prior to upgrading, you out of luck when it
comes to backing out to a prior version of iTunes.

BUT...you can tweak things back to the old iTunes interface with some
command-line juju and poking around various options in the interface.

After considerable grumbling and experimentation(I am stubborn) I did those
things. I still miss the master music list and the album covers at the
bottom of the playlist rather than wasting 3 inches of content,
particularly since I've had to scan in the covers of a goodly number of
them(apple is far from my only music source and I REALLY dislike most
popular music) i also liked being able to turn lists upsidedown now and
then and have yet to find that, if it still exists.

Does anyone have the foggiest idea what he's complaining about?

3" of what?

When I launch iTunes I get a list of all the 24,987 music tracks, just
like I've gotten in iTunes since... Well, since before it was called
iTunes.

I'm a she. And I get a fat graphic of an album cover or blank graphic
even for a single song. I don't get an actual uninterrupted list of
content. If you can tell me how to dump the graphics, I will be very
thankful. It's not in View or Prefs or in the useless Help menus.

This is what iTuens looks like for me. A list of songs, in this case,
sorted by album name.

Oh, I found that, but it's only partly there. There is more junk, but no
simple list of all my music. Everything has to be done a column at a time
by playlists, apparently.

Bull.

Click "Music" on the left side bar, then click the "Songs" tab at the
top. Presto - full multi-column listing of all of your music. If you
choose View > Column Browser from the menu bar, you can hide/show the
column browser as well.

Show me a screen shot then.

For me, Music > Songs displays a multi-column listing of all songs
similar to this:

Yes. Go to the View menu, select Show View Options, and uncheck Show
Artwork near the top.

I did that before. It works for "Songs", but not for albums, artist, or
anything else, and it has all that stuff in the way at the top instead
of being a selectable column with up and down triangles. Only the
individual playlists can be set to the view I prefer. It was nice
having the album covers at the bottom of that column, but it's better
missing than getting in the way of detailed info and making the list
several times as long and so wide I have to scroll across for more than
minimal info. I can use it, but I don't have to like it.

Which is what I told you to select (Music > Songs), yet you acted as if it

I was missing a step. Now it looks right. I had to turn off Column View
or whatever it's called to get rid of the stuff on top.

It also works for Playlists, not just Songs. And under Artists and
Genres, you can make the album artwork relatively small via the slider
in the View Options.

> and it has all that stuff in the way at the top instead
> of being a selectable column with up and down triangles.

What stuff in the way??

Under Music/Songs or Music/Playlists, I can click on the various
columns (Name, Kind, Artist, ...) to sort forward or backward by those
columns.

I don't like having the album covers waste so much space either, but
at least under Songs and Playlists you can avoid them, and in the
other lists you can shrink them. And you can sort Music/Songs by
Album, giving you a list view sorted by, uh, albums.

I too would prefer to have a list view available for the Albums
display itself but c'est la vie.

So this helped a lot. I hadn't figured out about adding and subtracting
columns from the headers in the Song category. But with an iPod (Touch
4th gen, IOS 6) I haven't figured out how to play an album in track
order. It seems to be randomizing the order. I was hoping that
switching to the Song category on the iPod would give me the same
options that exist in iTunes on the computer but the ability to sort
isn't there. Does one really have to muck with playlists to play an
album in track order on an iPod?

I'm still arguing with 11, but I've been tinkering with iTunes for years.
Because I so often add albums from obscure CDs where I have to type in all
the info myself, I've learned to number the tracks and tell iTunes it's
part of a compilation. I usually don't bother, though.
