I was running beta versions of Safari for a bit. It's not excluded that
one of these was buggy WRT the issue at hand.

You'll see it here first. Thass a promise.

I tried it just a moment ago, with candelabra.com (which I had never
browed before) and it did not give me a google search result; it took
me to that web site.

I tried it with a number of other web sites, and got the same results.

Yeah. I misread. I thought he was saying he typed an incomplete domain
name, like "candelabra" (without the ".com"). My bad.

A question: I've gotten used to skipping the "www" and "com" when
entering a Web address. Just typing "ebay" and hitting return takes me
to their Web site.

With a combined search/location box, what happens when I just type in
"ebay" and hit return? Do I get to <http://www.ebay.com> or do I get the
Google search results page for eBay?

And if I want, how do I get the opposite result?

many people have gotten used to that because it's how browsers have
worked for a couple of decades. now it wont do that.

you get google search results for 'ebay', with the first hit usually
(but not always) www.ebay.com.

> And if I want, how do I get the opposite result?

you append .com to whatever you type to get the url. safari will do it
with a trailing slash, and if it's in your history, it might
autocomplete it.

Wrong. Typing "ebay" and pressing Return will take you directly to the
site. I just did it several times and took a screen shot of it in
another post in this very thread.

(Since this is mr.know-it-all, never-can-admit-he's-wrong, nospam, you
can expect him to argue this until the bitter end as if he's right. But
anyone with a Mac running Mavericks with the latest version of Safari
can see for themselves that he's in fact just plain wrong.)

Ah, arguing trolls who know how the world works because they saw it
happen on their computer.

If you type in "ebay" into Safari, it will attempt to autocomplete from
history. If that fails, it will ask Google. If Google has a high
confidence or paid match, it converts the URL to a full path and loads
it. If Google doesn't have that kind of a match, it shows search
results.

This is one of my least favorite security holes. Entering

host.domain.tld/path/path/

into Safari sends the path to Google. It's an unacceptable information
leak because it may reveal information about private corporate networks.
It's also a pain in the ass because I don't want search results.

Now to make it really stupid, Safari hides the protocol so you can't
visibly see if it's a full URL or a search term for Google. You have to
wait for the pop-up menu to appear and manually select "Go to...".

Then maybe you should go into Safari Preferences > Privacy and uncheck
the "Prevent search engine from providing suggestions" box sometime
rather than bitching about something you control.

Some people just love to bitch about bullshit. The rest of us just get

I'm sure you don't get any shit done. You haven't even gotten around to
trying your incorrect recommendations.

"Prevent search engine from providing suggestions" prevents realtime
auto-complete as you type. It still contacts Google when you hit
"Enter" unless you type in a complete URL, with the protocol prefix, or
have a history match.

I've had enough fun poking the trolls. See you in a few days.

So it's a partial solution. Oh, the HORROR! How dare I? Crucify me on a
cross for my sin of not presenting you with the ultimate solution! Yet,
something tells me that surely someone as brilliantly witty as yourself
realizes there are other solutions available, no? Or does it take a
"troll" such as myself to show you the way? Fine, have it your way.
Here's just one:

I'll leave it to your awesome mental capabilities to find others that

I doubt that you've had enough of your "fun", but I'm ever-hopeful.

it's not wrong at all. you haven't been paying any attention, so here
it is again:

it only does that *if* you have been to the site in question, something
which i already mentioned more than once, including in what you snipped
from the very post to which you are responding and in my first post to
this thread, over 3 days ago. that's very disingenuous, not that i'm
the least bit surprised.

if it's not in the history, you have to either add the .com yourself or
remember to add a trailing slash which is non-intuitive. who would
think that ebay/ would convert to www.ebay.com? that's a trick you
would have had to have read somewhere to know. bad design.

actually, they can see that it works exactly as i described on several
occasions and that i am not wrong at all.

they will also see that you are once again talking out your ass and
dropping to your usual puerile insults, as you have here.

It's most certainly wrong when you've already visited the site in
question, which is the majority of the time. The ONLY time it's right is
when you have never, ever visited th site in question. Once you've
visited it, it works the way I describe.

Sure, sure. Mistakes just never happen in your universe.

Are you are aware there are more top level domains than .com? I'm not
sure how realistic it is to expect the web browser to know what web site
you want without actually specifying the domain name...

You're right for one specific case: you've never, ever visited the web
site before. That happens exactly one time for each web site. Hardly the
normal behavior. The way I described, on the other hand, is the way it
more commonly works.

I can dish it out just like you. I can also stop dishing it out whenever
you decide to stop. We both know when that will happen. So I guess you'd
better just get used to it.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with what i said.

i explained the scenarios in my very first post, way back on 1/17:

they certainly do in yours, as they do everywhere.

i'm well aware of that, and that's nothing more than a lame diversion
anyway.

.com is by far the most common case, which is why it has been
automatically appended for roughly two decades.

it's *that* common of a case that the iphone had a dedicated .com key.

that is, until last fall when someone decided it didn't look good so
the .com key was removed in ios 7 along with the / key.

the .com and other domains are now hidden beneath the period key,
something that's impossible to figure out without having heard it or
read it elsewhere. yet another step backwards in usability.

nope. it's not one specific case. as i said, i explained the relevant
scenarios. you just weren't paying any attention to what was posted and
still aren't.

you just can't admit you screwed up, can you? hilarious, really.
absolutely hilarious.

i only dish it out when you instigate it, and you can't handle it when
it comes back to bite you in the ass.

yes, we all know you never get anything wrong yourself. and yet you
immediately assume other people's mistakes are intentional. you're so
transparent it's fucking boring.

oh deary dear me! can you find in your huge, loving heart to forgive me
for being human and leaving such a huge and important detail out?! i'll
clarify my statement:

you're right for two specific cases: (1) you've never, ever visted the web
site before *and* (2) you don't include a trailing slash.

now that better matches your original statement. somehow I sense
thats just not going to satisfy your massive superiority complex.

> you just can't admit you screwed up, can you? hilarious, really.
> absolutely hilarious.

i'm sure you crack yourself up all the time. you're such a fun guy!
you'd have to be a complete idiot if you can't see that just above I
said "You're right." keep on acting a fool, though, if it suits you.

the last thing I want is you being concerned about my ass. i don't roll
that way, so keep away. and i can handle anything you dish out, girlie
girl.
