I just installed Mavericks and the new version of Safari seems to not have one feature the previous one did -- the search field in the upper right of the browser screen that lets you search google. Is this gone now or is there a way to get it back?

Is this gone now or is there a way to get it back? The search field has been combined with the URL field. If you put in what looks like a URL, it will try to open that. If you put in anything else it will do a search. (There's a pick-list in the Safari general preferences to select among Google, Yahoo, or Bing as the default search engine.) If you put quotes around a URL you enter in that field, it'll search for that rather than open it. I like this new feature, except when I use another machine that hasn't been updated and find myself entering a search term into the URL field. Ted

I think it *is* more intuitive. My elderly mother always gets confused between those two fields. She doesn't know what a URL is, she just wants to type what she wants in the most obvious field. I always have to tell her "No, if you're searching you have to use the Google box on the right". -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

That's how it's been working since at least Mountain Lion (I don't know about Lion: I was forced to go from Snow Leopard directly to Mountain Lion, which, BTW, I fundamentally dislike -- I think it absolutely sucks wind.) One response mentioned that it no longer automatically adds ".com" if you type a word without the TLD suffix. But if you don't like the browser "helping" you, it seems like you should object to that as well. Essentially, they've just replaced one heuristic (treat a single word as an abbreviation for word.com) with another (treat a single word as a search term). Actually, it seems like it should be possible to have both. If you type a single word, it can try connecting to word.com and www.word.com. If it can't, then it can use it as a search. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

But lots of Mac users *aren't* smart enough! Remember the old slogan, the "computer for the rest of us"? My mother, for example, would always try to enter search terms in the address bar. Other browsers have done this for years, Apple finally caught on. It's not really a matter of "we're smarter than you", it's "why do you need two fields when it's easy to tell a URL from a search string?" -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***
