#19485 — Word and directories

SubjectWord and directories

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the Word 2011 Open dialog defaults to the
Documents directory no matter what directory I previously used to open a
doc. Is this behavior I can change? It used to remember what dir. I
opened a doc from last. Have installed latest updates; no change.

Do you have Default Folder installed? I think the latest beta will run
on Mavericks. It's designed to change this behavior.

It looks great but is it really worth $35?

Word and Excel display the problem (also TextWrangler); Adobe Reader,
Photoshop, and TextEdit don't. Go figure...

A little more on this problem: in Word and other apps that show the odd
behavior, The Save dialog briefly shows the last directory I saved to,
then defaults to the Documents directory. Does this help in diagosis?

I didn't pay that much, but I've been using it for over a decade
and consider it well worth the price. Don't you get tired of
slogging down a folder tree every time you want to open or save
a file?

I never had to do that until I upgraded to Mavericks, and at that only
Microsoft Office 2011 apps have lost the ability to remember where I
last opened or saved a file.

What about programs other than Word? What about the file *before*
the last one you opened or saved? DF gives you shortcuts in every
program, and you can access them by time but also by other criteria.

Word and Excel display the problem (also TextWrangler); Adobe Reader,
Photoshop, and TextEdit don't. I'm not quite ready to shell out $35 for
this yet.

IIRC, it's sometimes included in these MacUpdate and other bundles
every now and then, if you can find one that offers something else you
are interested in.

Also, I can't imagine that any single program will give you quick
access to a folder that was recently used by a different program.
I frequently make PDF'd invoices from Word, and I always like to
check them to make sure they look okay in Acrobat. Default Folder
makes that really easy, because when I switch over to Acrobat, it
knows which folder I was just using with Word.

Anyway, chacun a son gout, but I've found DF extremely helpful
over the years.

I've been using it for over a decade.

It's your call on if this annoyance is worth $35 or are you getting more
milage about complaining about it? Sometimes, that's worth more to
people.

I have Mavericks (10.9) and Word 2011 installed and do not see that problem.
I don't use any add-ons like Default Folder or other app that would alter the
normal Open/Save dialog.

Same here. After opening a document on my desktop and restarting Word,
the dialog box opens viewing the Desktop as expected.

I think it is somewhere in the Word preferences. Installing 10.9
apparently damaged or defaulted some but not all preference files.
My copy of Office 2011 started demanding a license key every time
I tried to use it. Fixed by copying in all its pref files from
another Mac OS partition--which also gave me this directory hassle.

The GUI preference setting, though, doesn't have a "use last" setting.
Mine will allow me to choose a place, but it's currently blank, and if I
click "Modify" I'm offered a standard Mac finder widget. (With no "use
last" option)
