#19021 — Office 2012

FromTim Streater <timstreater@greenbee.net>
Date2013-10-30 12:21 +0000
SubjectOffice 2012
Message-ID<301020131221011083%timstreater@greenbee.net>
Office 2008 in use here, doesn't seem too bad but there are some
oddities [1] about it. Had considered going to Office 2012, but:

1) Are there fewer odd things than in O-2008?

2) Do people find they get used to this new-fangled ribbon or does it
continue to be a monstrosity?

3) Is it possible to dispense with the ribbon in O-2012 altogether and
just have the traditional look to it all - menus and popup panels?

[1] Can't quite put my finger on what I mean by oddities, just that I
have to be continually careful when doing stuff. Recently I made a
change to a bar chart and all the bars suddenly became wafer thin and
barely visible. And if I'm typing text into a spreadsheet cell, I can't
use the arrow keys to back up in that text. Etc.

Why are you posting about Windows versions of Office to csm.apps?

I suspect there are people, somewhere, who like the ribbon. I've
never met one.

Consider my post suitably amended.

I don't particularly follow what MS does with Office, but had the
impression they did new releases every 4 years.

It varies. I've supported Offices 2003, 2007, and 2010 at work on
Windows. I don't believe there have been any other versions between.

On Mac, I'm only aware of Offices X, 2008, and 2011. (And I don't think
I saw any others when looking at MSDN downloads that my employer bought
subscription for.)

I've got a Office 365 Home subscription, and 2011 is the newest for the
Mac. They supposedly are working on getting it more up to date 'soon'!

I guess this is typical Usenet fiddling while Rome burns. I don't
really give a monkey's whether the Win/Mac versions were released in
2011/2012 as I assumed, or in 2010/2011 as appears to be the case.

I asked some questions in my OP. Now, you clowns gonna give some
opinions on that or continue with release date trivia. Answers on a
postcard please, or, preferably, here.

Thank you - so kind.

You got that right: Hell at least the topic is still tangentially on

While on the topic, is Office 2011 fully supported in Mavericks?

The system requirements for Office 2011 say "10.5.8 or later", and
Office 2011 is still supported, therefore it would be fair to assume
that if there are any compatibility issues, Microsoft will fix them in
an update.

If there are any compatibilty issues with Office 2008, Microsoft won't
fix them since they have stopped supporting that version.

I haven't found any obviously placed official statements from Microsoft
about OS X 10.9 support/compatibility, but there was this in a forum
thread, with a moderator saying that both 2008 and 2011 were compatible.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macstart/office-2011-compatibility-with-os-x-109/9610760c-bd9e-4ea6-a89b-729473efe08b

Other comments in the thread suggest that there are problems with
non-English versions of Office 2011, and the same moderator mentioned
problems with multiple displays.

I've had no issues with 2008 for Word and Excel. Haven't done any
PowerPoint with it since Mavericks.

I do notice that editing a photo into a Word document remains a
painfully slow and tedious thing (which I fortunately don't do often)
and I recently resorted to (shh!) the new "free" Pages to do so.

The newest release for Mac is called MSOffice 2013. The prior version is
the ver. 2011.

No, just the opposite. Both ver. 2011 and 2013 are far much worse than
MSO 2008.

> 2) Do people find they get used to this new-fangled ribbon or does it

I tried both versions for a couple of months, but never get used to work
with it, so I went back to my MSO 2008

I don't like the ribbons and along with the monster-menus these take all
too much space up - even on a 27" monitor. Hereto I find both MSO 2011
and 2013 way too slow.

Graphs and charts have always been a problem with the newer versions of
MSO - both Mac and Windows versions. So instead I stick with my MSO 2008
and have installed the newest Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0. It is quite
stable though it is a 'release candidate'. I've also found that
compatibility with Excel now works fairly good. - Earlier versions of
OpenOffice might lose cross references, but I haven't observed this in
ver. 4.0 until now. - Don't work with graphs and charts, so here I can't
tell which is the better one.

I have OpenOffice on both my Macs and my Windows machine and they are
set up identically in OpenOffice and as close as possible in MSO 2008
(Mac) and 2003 (Win).

Cheers, Erik Richard

Well you can google for office 2013, but all the links will show you it
is office 2011. They have not yet released a newer version for the
Mac.

It's Office 2011, and I've gotten used to it. I use Word and Excel every
day. The Mac Excel is slightly impaired in features compared to the Win
version, but fortunately I don't use those features. You have the option
of not using the ribbon, however I've gotten used to it now. Overall my
experience is decent with 2011 version and if you check on ebay you can
probably save yourself some money on a brand new sealed one. If you want
Outlook you will have to get the "business" version.
