They don't get in the way for me. The two to the left of the left mouse button are for adjusting the mouse's DPI, no custom driver needed (or you can set them using the custom driver to do other stuff). The three above where you rest your thumb I use for Exposé functions or game controls using USB Overdrive or the game's own setup. I've miss-clicked a button only twice in the year since I got the G500s - a lot less than the I do on the MS Intellimouse with it's too-large side buttons, the Apple mice with their squeezes, middle click and 'entire shell is the button', or did with my now broken DeathAdder, which had it's side buttons a little too near my thumb. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

It will gunk up if yu are a heavy user using your computyer all day, and it will last much longer if you use your computer for only 1 hour per day. The Mighty Mouse was a nice ergonomic design (except for side buttons that were really really cheap without any "click" feedback). However, it was an industrial design failure because it did not last and was not user serviceable (designed to not be). The Magic Mouse is also designed to not be user serviceable. But at least, it does not gunk up or require maintenance. (except for batteries since no USB model is available)

In some cases it's also probably also caused by people eating at their computers. It would also probably be worse in certain climates (for example, people in humid conditions with sweaty hands). One place I worked had about 10 of the Mighty Mouse iMacs when they were first released, and they were in use the all day every week day (and very occasionally at weekends) with nobody ever having any issue with them. > The Mighty Mouse was a nice ergonomic design (except for side buttons > that were really really cheap without any "click" feedback). On occasion the "gunk" can even block the sensor.

That's pretty good actually - maybe they didn't use the computer very often.
I never had one go more than a month without jamming up. Cleaning? Not
worth the time. I used a Logitech wireless mouse for quite a while and
then a few years ago I bought the trackpad.
I also have a Magic Mouse but don't use it at all. It's quite heavy and
not very comfortable in my hands.
The Mighty Mouse is a piece of crap. And that's being unkind to all the
good crap out there.

It takes 9 months to a year. weeks to months for me and most people i know. flip it over and rub it on a cleaner soaked cloth was standard procedure, something that would not have been needed if there was a simple way to remove the trackpea so it could be cleaned, like there was to remove the trackball the old non-laser mice. very bad design.

Which is why you'll see lots of advertising saying "Don't drink and mouse". ;-)

Mine did occasionally get clogged, but clearing it up was relatively easy most of the time. That said, I did have to take one or two apart to give them a more thorough cleaning, which was a pain and resulted in the mouse not being quite as well assembled. Considering the ball is a physical moving part, I more or less expected it to get clogged up with dust occasionally. It was truly no big deal to me at the time. *shrug* -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

It was truly no big deal to me at the time. *shrug* No, I wouldn't say it was a big deal either, but I knew how to deal with it. People like my Nana found it easier to just get a mouse with a scrollwheel that can't clog, as I wasn't over often enough to deal with the issue, and despite being a tidy person, it seemed to happen often to her. Anyway, for gaming and other activities I needed a mouse I could lift up without the button releasing. And with the latest Apple mouse I'm not into touch. I far prefer my Logitech G500s or the Razer Deathadder before it's custom driver became utterly boneheaded and required to access key functions of the mouse. But each to their own - I know people who love their scrollballs and don't mind occasional taking apart and cleaning. I liked the puck mouse that came with my CRT iMacs. Few others seemed to, heh. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Scroll wheels do clogged as well though. I know a few Windoze users who have suffered from that problem, which is why the Mighty Mouse always seemd better ... although personally I can't be bothered with either, probably because I' so used to my ADB mouse mouse which has neither (and only one button).. > Anyway, for gaming and other activities I needed a mouse I could lift up > without the button releasing. You can turn off the touch functions of the Magic Mouse and just use it as a normal mouse ... it's been a while since I've used one, but I'm pretty sure they have proper clickable buttons underneath. > But each to their own - I know people who love their scrollballs and > don't mind occasional taking apart and cleaning. For others, which I'll never understand how they did it, they somehow managed to keep twisting the mouse around so it was sideways or back-to-front, and they claimed they never knew which way it meant to be, despite it having a cable coming out the back. :-\

But it was fairly rare to turn it arround accidently in my hand, and it scares me to learn there were people who couldn't figure out which way was up *hides from the world* -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
