Oh they certainly get clogged up. Infrequently enough, however, to make using them well worth it. -- Tim "That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted" -- Bill of Rights 1689

I'm not sure that should work, but assuming it does the same should still work with the Magic Mouse and the Magic Touchpad.

Preview.app in snow leopard has the ability to use the "Hand" to drag content too bit to fit in a window. So, if you were to take that "file" (a bundle/folder full of files) and put it in the Applications folder in Maveriks, would it work ? And if so, you would then have the ability to use the hand which is missing from the Maveriks version.

This kind of thing often used to work in classic MacOS, but nowadays almost all Apple apps require other parts of the OS to work, and if they're not present or are changed, then it's not going to work. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

It didn't always work in classic Mac OS either. For example, the game Lemmings played fine in early versions, but at some point Apple made changes to the OS and the game lost it's ability to play any of the sounds.

I was referring to actual Apple made apps and applets bundled into the OS, not apps that just work on Macs. Though there was a fix for Lemmings that enabled sound on MacOS up to 8.6 (and possibly 9, but I never tried it under 9). -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

It doesn't really matter who made the application, Lemming was just an example. An old Apple application that played sound using the same method as Lemmings would also fail on the newer operating system. When Apple removes something from the OS, it afects all of the old applications that relied on that particular system resource.

Yeah but I was talking about parts of System 7.1 working in 7.6 and parts of 8 working in 8.6. Not apps like AppleWorks or Filemaker, but the apps/applets/control panels/extensions that were part of the system in classic days. I wish I could remember some examples... it's been so long. But I recall mixing and matching parts of the older system software fairly often for various reasons, throughout my years of classic MacOS use. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

For example, when I upgrade this computer to Mac OS X 8.2, the new calculator was hopelessly slow to open up, so I dragged the old calculator from the backup copy of Mac OS X 10.1 and it works fine. Problems occur when Apple makes major changes to parts of the operating system which an old application relies on - that happened in classic and Mac OS X, as well as Windows and any other operating system. The obvious example is commercial games of course, which quite often fall over trying to run on a newer operating system.

Well I'm guessing the calculator app doesn't call many rapidly updated libraries and APIs. But Safari OTOH... Still - I did not know that about Calculator - interesting! :-) -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

The 10.2 Calculator on the other hand is an rather over-bloated and slow, with scientific and paper tape options, conversions, etc. I keep both versions in the Applications folder (with the 10.2 one renamed as "Calculator Scientific), but most of the time I need it is when needing to do simple calculations, so the 10.1 version lives in the Dock.

The latest update for iBooks required you to close Preview before proceeding, so it appears that at least some libraries are shared between the two. Hmm, I might try the NL version of Preview later and see if it works under 10.9. It seems sensible to rename it to something else to avoid conflicts in future updates of course. -- Paul Sture

I don't know if it works, but it could be worth trying the various modifier key combinations while clicking / dragging (for example Option-drag, or Command-drag, or Shift-Option-drag).

Two dimensional scrolling (I think the correct term is panning?) in which the image moves in tandem with mouse movement, is no longer possible in Preview. One-dimensional scrolling is still possible by using the scroll wheel (up & down, or by holding shift, left & right), or by clicking and dragging the scroll bars. But this etch-a-skech method of moving to the part of the image you want is in no way a suitable replacement for the panning ability of the 2-D hand drag tool. -- K. Lang may your lum reek.

I don't do much image work with Preview at the moment, so the following
applies to PDF viewing in Preview
o - no horizontal scrollbar; it's gone
o - with my Preferences settings, there is a vertical scrollbar for
multiple page PDFs and the mouse wheel can be used to scroll up and
down
o - with single page PDFs there is no vertical scrollbar, even when
zoomed.
o - Page Up / Page Down allows vertical movement in a single page
zoomed PDFs
o - the arrow keys allow moving both vertically and horizontally in
zoomed PDFs

Assuming the PDF is bigger than the windows, then the arrow keys on the
keyboard might work, but I don't see why the scrollbars aren't there
(they are stupidly hidden these days of course).
