Just checked. The arrow keys work as you suggested.

I just don't get this Apple obsession with trying to fix stuff that
ain't broke. It results in a worse user experience than existed in
earlier versions of a particular application. Change for change's sake
is not a good philosophy, neither is the minimal approach the best one,
even if it is a Jony Ive principle.

The disappearing scrollbars are a stupid decision that pre-dates Ive
direct interference, although. he might have been involved indirectly.

They might want me to buy a trackpad, but my input devices of choice
remain a MS Trackball optical and a Wacom Intuos 4. A trackpad does not
provide the precision and ease of interaction of those devices, and I
have no interest in learning a bizarre set of gestures.

They're not bizarre at all. ;)

What!!
Apple is discriminating against the "digitally" impaired. I was never
able to (or truly wanted to) engage in Vulcan salutes, or stand on my
head while moving my big toe in concert with my left ring finger and
nose across a trackpad to perform a task which has been simple to
execute in the past.

Me neither, but I am able to swipe one, two, three, or even four
fingers across a track pad, and I'm able to even move my thumb and
forefinger together or apart. I can even tap the pad with my
forefinger and middle finger simultaneously.

No need for head standing, nor use of toes or noses.

Page Up / Page Down is the only way to move up and down a single page
PDF.

The first time this happened I couldn't get to a vital piece of
information at the bottom of a document until I reopened it in
PDFpenPro.

Yes, Preview's new behaviour stinks.

And no, I'm not buying a Trackpad at that silly price. I can get
a backup keyboard and a couple or three meeces for that amount.

Isn't there a way to force scroll bars to appear post Snow Leopard ?

System Preferences / General

Show scroll bars

1. Automatically based on mouse or trackpad
2. When Scrolling
3. Always

Been there done that, I have "Always" selected, I believe that applies
to finder windows. However, in Preview that does nothing to restore the
scroll bars especially with a PDF zoomed in larger than the window.

They appear here with a zoomed PDF, with "Always" checked. Preview 7, 10.9

Well that is not the result I get with "Always" checked in OSX 10.9;

...and with a zoomed PDF open in Preview 7.0;

No scroll bar to be found.

I've shown you mine why don't you show me yours? ;-)

Works fine here. I have "Always" selected, and Preview is showing a
vertical scroll bar even if I zoom out far enough to see the entire
document. If I change the setting in System Preferences, the scroll bars
appear or disappear immediately in Preview, Finder and most other
applications. In older applications (including MacSOUP), the scroll bars
are always there no matter which setting I use.

On the other hand, Preview (in OS X 10.9) does NOT have a horizontal
scroll bar under any setting or scroll activity.

With a JPEG zoomed over window size I get both vertical & horizontal
scroll bars in OSX 10.9 & Preview 7.

Same here - I was trying a PDF, didn't think to try an image file like
JPEG.

> ...but not so with a PDF, with that there are no scroll bars.
> < https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1295663/FileChute/screenshot_411.jpg >

Is it only affecting some PDFs or are you not getting scroll bars on any
PDF? I get a vertical scroll bar on single and multi-page PDFs at all
zoom levels.

I found a PDF I had which wasn't a standard paper size, and on that PDF
I don't get a vertical scroll bar in Preview, unless I resize the window
vertically at certain zoom levels.

Most of my PDFs are A4 (21 x 29.71 cm), and several are US Letter (21.59
x 27.94 cm).

The particular one which didn't have scroll bars in the initial view was
17.05 x 25.4 cm, and it was a single page.
