I just don't use iPhoto for anything it doesn't do well. It's still useful though. I manage all of my photos with it. I like the face and event detection, search ux, and I like that anything in the cloud is there too. But some things I do outside of iPhoto. If I'm editing a photo, I'm usually doing it in Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, and so on. > My favorite graphics program still hasn't been updated and my interest > in PhotoShop is nonexistent. Photoshop used to be my default image editor. I've owned Photoshop 2.5 through CS5. But Adobe's software has become too expensive. And there are other applications out there now that do most everything it does with full file support for a lot less money. I'm loving Affinity Designer and Photo at the moment. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Nothing wrong with that. And in that case, Aperture would work just fine for you. Aperture is, as others have noted, well behind Lightroom, but that probably doesn't matter for your purposes. Get it and use it in good health. Don't let it bundle your photos in a package; organize your photos in logically conceived folders in the Finder outside Aperture and have Aperture reference them. Rename them within Aperture and assign keywords. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

My favorite graphics program still hasn't been > updated and my interest in PhotoShop is nonexistent. As others have mentioned, Aperture is basically an expanded version of iPhoto with better photo library management and editing features. It is going to become unavailable for purchase from the App Store within the next few weeks, when Apple releases the Photos app (which will require OS X 10.10.3 or later). Given your historic reluctance to upgrade operating systems and the looming removal of Aperture from App Store, I'm wondering whether you will even be able to run the copy of Aperture you might be getting, or update an older version to one which is compatible with your OS. Which OS X version are you currently running, which version of Aperture is it that you might be getting, and what is the timeframe for possibly getting it? Aperture was originally sold as a boxed retail product (versions 1, 2 and 3). It moved to the App Store in early 2011, with a price drop. It was updated for each subsequent OS X version, and the current/final version is 3.6 which requires OS X 10.10 Yosemite. If you are getting Aperture 1 or 2, it has no upgrade path short of buying another copy of Aperture on App Store (while it is still available). These versions predate Snow Leopard and are more likely to have problems. If you were getting Aperture 3 as a boxed product and are running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you are probably OK, because the last update compatible with Snow Leopard is still available as a standalone download: Aperture 3.2.4. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1538 If you were getting Aperture 3 as a boxed product and are running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or later, then you need to convert the licence from the boxed product to the App Store version to get a compatible version. As far as I know, that conversion mechanism only exists in OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later, and it would have to be done before Apple removes Aperture from the App Store. After Aperture is removed from App Store, versions compatible with recent OS X versions will only be available to those who have already obtained Aperture from the App Store, so it is already on their purchases list. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Aperture has reached its end of life, you would be buying a corpse. If all you want or need are the basics, the new Photos app from Apple might work for you when it is finally released. The better option is to go with Lightroom which gives you powerful library/catalog features, along with a very capable photo editor. It is available as a stand alone (disc or download) or as part of a Creative Cloud subscription which also gives you Photoshop for $9.99/month. <http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html> Then there is the very good Pixelmator. <http://www.pixelmator.com> -- Regards, Savageduck
