#28709 — Apple Watch

FromAV3 <arvimide@earthlink.net>

SubjectApple Watch
Message-ID<mg9s1j$75q$1@news.albasani.net>
I ordered my Apple Watch a couple of minutes after midnight, PDT, and
was informed I should receive it in the second half of May. I will check
out its avatar at an Apple store in the meantime.

Did anyone get a promise of earlier delivery? New reports late today
state that delivery in July is the current delivery date.

Has someone created an Apple Watch newsgroup? I checked out the words
"watch" and "applewatch" without finding them in the name of any Apple
newsgroup. If not, which newsgroup is the proper one in which to discuss it?

Since the Apple Watch is an iPhone accessory, I would think the
appropriate NG would be misc.phone.mobile.iphone

Delivery is partially based on the model of the watch and the band. At
midnight last night, the •Watch Sport was scheduled for delivery
between April 24 and May 1. The •Watch edition was scheduled for July
or August, depending on the band and whether it is rose gold or yellow
gold.

You beat me by going directly to a store. I was afraid of long lines, to
which I am allergic. I ordered the •Watch Milanese like you. For the
amount spent, it seems inconsiderate to delay the •Watch edition so
late. That's the worst first world problem I ever heard of.

going to a store would not have helped since they sold out of the
initial batch before stores even opened (unless you live in australia
or something).

not only that, but if you walk into a store and ask to buy one, they
help you order it online, the same as if you just stayed home and did
that.

do you really think they're intentionally delaying the gold edition?

No, but I thought they would have highest priority for delivery. I doubt
Apple expects to sell a thousand during the next year. Couldn't they
have a couple of hundred ready by the earliest delivery date? I would
expect that kind of priority if I were spending that much money for a
watch case. Maybe demand far outpaced Apple's expectations. I expect I
got a relatively early delivery date promised because I ordered a
relatively expensive model that is less in demand.

wtf for? they're certainly not going to sell the gold editions in the
same numbers as the other two versions.

the highest priority should be the ones that are going to sell the
most, which is *not* the gold version.

> I doubt
> Apple expects to sell a thousand during the next year.

don't be stupid. apple probably sold way more than 1000 gold editions
*already*.

they sold out of the initial batch in just *hours* and if this launch
is like previous ones, it's probably several *million* watches. assume
1% want gold (probably low but it's as good a guess as any), that's
tens of thousands in *just* preorders.

or maybe the gold version is in higher demand than apple thought it
would be.

Apparently the big gold edition pre-order came in China.

What evidence can you provide that shows they don't?

Perhaps not economically. Why does it matter so much to you?

Or maybe your suggestion that they don't have the highest priority for
delivery is incorrect.

Yes. And so what?

That I got an earlier delivery date (the second half of May) than gold
watch buyers. That says to me that orders are being filled more on the
basis of first come/first served. That pleases me. It surprises me that
big spenders are not coddled in the way I expected.

It doesn't "matter" to me, it just interests me. The news in my neck of
the woods is that high rent and maintenance payers are demanding
privileges over those paying legally determined "affordable" rents in
residential developments. It is part of the decades-long debate about
the value of rent control and rent stabilization.

of course orders are filled first come/first serve.

why would anyone do anything else??

if you ordered a gold watch at 12:01a on friday, you might have had a
4/24 ship date. 5-10 minutes later, shipping times for *all* versions
slipped into may or later.

You're not consistent. You argued that airlines are performing a service
to customers by charging graduated fees for seat selection service that
was previously first come/first serve and without a fee. I favor first
come/first serve for both airline and Apple services. But I was prepared
to see the enormous price differential as an entitlement to early
service on a few dozen gold-encased watches.

That suggests a considerable underestimate of demand. It probably takes
goldsmiths that much time to make at least several hundred more cases. I
ordered the same watch as Michelle just after midnight EDT online, while
she ordered hers in an Arizona store, presumably several hours later,
but we both ended up in the same delivery promise time, suggesting that
demand for that watch was relatively low and stretched out through that
ordering period.

Actually, I ordered it on line with my iPad while at the Apple Store.

I ordered online a couple of minutes after midnight, PDT, but I presume
you visited that store several hours later, and we both ended up in the

Yes, I ordered it about 7:30 - 7:45 PM.

At a few minutes after midnight, the shipping time was 4-6 weeks; when
I ordered it, the shipping time was the same.

I doubt that anyone got any earlier shipping times for this particular
model.

not a good comparison, and the price of the gold watch is in line with
other gold watches.

airline seat selection is first come/first serve. if you want 12a and
someone else picks it before you do, you must choose another seat, no
matter how much money you want to pay.

some seats are blocked off for elite customers, such as ones towards
the front or the exit row because those pax fly a lot and the airline
caters to them, versus the kettles who fly once a year, if that much.

of course, you can always pay a premium for business or first class,
but you get a better product. it's the equivalent of a gold watch.

regardless of seat, you still get to the destination at the same time
everyone else does.

it's much better than an overestimate of demand.

also keep in mind that the factories can only produce a certain amount
no matter what their estimates are. they are no doubt making as many as
they can.

the iphone 6/6+ was supply constrained until december/january or so.

it isn't low demand.

In economy class many seats are now blocked off purely for pay, not
offered privately to elite customers. All those seats were formerly
offered first come/first serve. On long flights, extra leg room and
short rows are highly desirable.

On airlines today, even many "economy" class seats are also in that
category.

the seats are still first come/first serve but airlines reserve the
better seats for customers who fly a lot, versus the kettles who don't.

if you regularly buy large volumes of apple products per year, you'll
get priority service too.

like hell they are.

there's a *huge* difference between premium economy and first/biz.
