Similar history, I started using the Internet around 1993, first through 
dial up with DELPHI, IIRC.  I was using my Mac 512Ke initially with a 
14.4 modem.  

I remember buying a book for Mac users about the Internet that came with 
a disk with the necessary TCP/IP stuff that Apple didn't include at that 
time.  Aarrgghh, now I am stuggling to come up with the guy's name:  
Adam something?  He went on to have a fairly prominent web site about 
Macs but I can't remember the name.  Pesky aging brain cells.

I recall reading Ed Krol's Whole Internet book and not having a frickin' 
clue what he was on about most of the time (never having seen Unix at 
that time) and, as I recall, DELPHI did not provide a shell account.  
There were some local BBSes that could pass some things through to the 
wider Internet.  How times have changed.
