This apparently happened because I have two-factor authentication
enabled for my Apple ID.  It seems that FaceTime under Mavericks has
no way of telling me why it fails to log me in when the password and
ID I use are correct.

FaceTime under a brand new Yosemite install, on the other hand, gave
me the relevant error message.

Setting up an application-specific Apple ID password for FaceTime
resolved the problem.
