Because they still exist on the camera, and you are asking iPhoto to
import what is on the camera. ; )

Yep. Otherwise you'll have to wait while iPhoto compares what is on the
phone with what is on your computer, to skip importing duplicates.

iPhoto asks you whether you want to delete them after importing. Just
choose to delete them:
